It is unbelievable what it costs to take care of your pets now a days!

    Here is my current dilemma.

When we moved into the new place and our cats got out a couple of times. Only a couple of minutes each time. All over the complex are these shrubs that have thorns. Apparently one of our cats (punkin) got his eye scratched by the thorns. He got an ulcer in his eyeball. It was really far back and they were afraid that it would push the retina out. Gross, I know. They were talking about having to remove his eye, but wanted to try medicine first. That cost $70. Then I put him on the medicine and was impressed at how fast his eye was clearing up. He is light sensitive, but you can at least see his eye now. It isn't all red anymore. I took him back today for the follow up visit. The vet said that he was able to see what was going on inside the ulcer now. He was really impressed, not only are the edges starting to heal and grow back on the inside, but also the blood vessels are rebuilding themselves. We get to continue the medicine treatment and it looks like he will be able to keep his eye. He has two prescriptions and they only give out one weeks supply at a time (to make you have to go back every fricking week). That was $61. It will continue to be $61 each week until his eye is completely healed over and the entire ulcer is filled in. We are looking at at least a month.

They should have insurance for this kind of crap. This is ridiculous. I could go to Rent-A-Center and buy a whole new living room set for less money!

By heather on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 03:13 pm:

this is a problem with rent-a-center, not with your vet

healing a child would have cost at least ten times that amount

By eri on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 03:59 pm:

I saw my children's bills from the hospital, and I know that it costs way too much for them too, but at least I have insurance for them and only pay the co-pay. Micki's doctor charged over $1,000,000.00 for her first month in the I.C.U. even though he only saw her once or twice a week. They charged over $7,000.00 per day for her to be in the incubator (not the equipment on the incubator or the things plugged into it to monitor her, but just the plastic box itself).

My problem is that it is so expensive to maintain the health of an animal. Everyone knows Rent-A-Center is overpriced.

    one million dollars?

By eri on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 05:05 pm:

Actually 1 million 10 thousand and change.

By patrick on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 05:16 pm:

reason #375 not to have children.

By Dougie on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 06:56 pm:

I spent a lot on my kitty towards the end. Reminded me of my 87 Honda Accord before I sold it. Too bad I couldn't just replace her clutch.

By eri on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 08:02 pm:

I hear that. My parents have a 10 acre horse ranch, their favorite horse got sick, I think they spent what your Honda was worth new to save her. Then they were broke and down 1 horse. Now they refuse to ride their horses. We call then their yard ornaments.

By agatha on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 08:21 pm:

there is pet insurance. if you have a high maintenance pet, it might be worth it.

By eri on Friday, March 15, 2002 - 11:13 pm:

This is the first thing that has happened and the first problem of any kind he has had in 14 years. For a cat, I think that is a good track record, but with his age, I am starting to wonder if it wouldn't be a good investment. Especially when you consider I have 3 cats and they are all getting older.

By wisper on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 01:04 am:

from what i hear, pet insurance isn't that
    much.

i love you guys and your health costs talks. It
makes me want to break my arm and drive to
the hospital and hang out in the E.R. every
day, just because it's free, so i can.
How much does it cost to call an ambulance?

By eri on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 11:07 am:

E.R. costs $50 if the insurance company agrees that it is an emergency. Otherwise you pay out of your own pocket for it.

Ambulances aren't covered by any insurance I have had. The last bill I received for one was about $375 for a 10 mile trip from hospital to hopsital when my Grandmother had a heart attack and had to be sent to a specialist hospital for a heart cath.

By Nate on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 12:49 pm:

how long would you have to hang out in the ER wisper?

By patrick on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 01:35 pm:

im a mile away from the Kaiser complex. Roughll 5 blocks of nothing but kaiser facilities. I like that.

By eri on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 02:07 pm:

I know who works at those Kaiser facilities. If I were you, I would be scared, very scared.

By Platypus on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 02:09 pm:

It cost me $3,000 for a ten mile ride, and then another $12,000 to be airlifted to santa rosa (two hours away by car).

But your cat's meds didn't sound soo expensive...they sounded about what human meds cost (which, considering that most pet meds are human meds with a new label, isn't surprising).

I wonder...it might be more expensive to remove the eye. But I commend you for spending the extra dollars rather than saying "oh, well, too expensive, put it down," which an alarming number of people do.

By heather on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 02:47 pm:

some human meds are pet meds with a new label. and pricetag.

By Christophers cat on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 03:22 pm:

I know a veterinary assistant who swipes ketamine on a regular basis, and sells it in the clubs around SF. They call it vitamin K, and I'm sure his markup is pretty steep. Why anyone would want to snort cat tranquilizers is beyond me, but its a big hit with the "X" crowd. I'm so glad I never advanced (plummeted) beyond pot and booze. If you're a club habitue, watch out what you snort from a strangers bullet on the dance floor. It aint like the good old days when it was just cocaine...

By eri on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 05:15 pm:

This cat has been in my family for 14 years now. The last thing I wanted was another cat, but there wasn't any alternative that was acceptable to me. (It was I take him or my sister does and she was homeless at the time, plus Grandma would come back from grave and kill me if her cat wound up with my sister). I wouldn't put him down unless it was the only merciful thing to do to him and he was going to die anyways.

His antibiotic is flavored for children. I thought that was funny. The cost of the meds is tolerable, but I think it is crazy that if he needs 3 weeks worth of treatment they will only give me one week's worth of medicine so I have to go in every week to get more and in the process pay for another office visit and another office visit, and another office visit.

On the cat meds are like human meds. I discussed this with the vet. One of my cats have an upper respiratory infection. It is viral so no antibiotics will help. I have had a lot of experience with calculating proper medicine doses to weight (having had two preemies) and as it turns out, they don't have cat decongestants, but I am supposed to get a bottle of infants Pedia Care for her and calculate the doseage to her weight. I thought that was funny. I listen to her lungs the same, I give her the same medicine. I treat my 4 year old cat the same as I would my 2 year old daughter.

By Platypus on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 08:24 pm:

    Yup.

Tranqs are really popular for some reason. We used to have a controlled substances log and safe to try and prevent them from growing legs, but it still happened.

    some people are wierd.

By eri on Saturday, March 16, 2002 - 11:07 pm:

I am weird but I don't go for tranqs. Maybe I am odd and weird, but I don't need tranqs to be
crazy. I do it well enough on my own.

By patrick on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 11:32 am:

ketamine can be used to tranquilize animals of all sizes, depending on the grade. In high school, a fellow cronie who had horses swiped that stuff on a regular basis.

i've snorted "special K" that made me see triple.

eri, while id like to be afraid and paranoid based on what you say you know about the Kaiser facility on Sunset...its all I have and considering I've been there for nothing more than a routine check up and to pick up my script for valium, I can't complain thus far. However feel free to share anything you may know.

By eri on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 11:41 am:

I happen to know two of the employees, one who does your labs and one who could be your "nurse" who really isn't a nurse, but would still be able to inject you with whatever to doctor said. Both of them are BIGTIME addicts and alcoholics. Careful, or Auntie Drunkard may be high and drunk when she gives you your flu shot (and she is a jab happy woman with a needle). Knowing them personally and the lives they lead, well I wouldn't want them near me in a medical facility. I would just watch out. It is the quality of the employee who could hurt you unintentionally, and the fact that Kaiser knows of the problem, but does nothing that worries me.

By patrick on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 11:53 am:

2 out of 5000-8000 employees at this one facility aint bad odds.

By eri on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 01:05 pm:

Hopefully only two. Anyways, good luck. With my horrible experiences with Kaiser and Hayley's and Grandma's I have to admit I am adamantly biased against them.
