I've been a busy beaver

sorabji.com: What have you done?: I've been a busy beaver

Since November I've been changing my life, one procrastinating week at a time. After leaving my job in Alabama I didn't get another job. My hope was that I could focus my life on continuing my education, researching a PhD topic, and basically ignite a fire under my ass so I could be motivated to devote the next few years to poverty and study.

I'm starting my PhD in a little under a week.

Today I was offered a research assistantship in the natural language processing lab at UT Dallas. That was completely unexpected! I had been searching for a job because all teaching assistantships were taken for the semester, and RA spots usually aren't awarded until you've been around for a while and proven yourself. I talked to the director of research today, though, and I think he just took pity on me. :)

So, now I have a fun semester to look forward to. All I have to do is 1) do research in a field, natural language processing, which I know next to nothing about, 2) study the thing I'm really interested in (genetic programming) and try to fit it into said research, 3) take two courses from the head professors in the natural language processing lab, 4) study for qualifying exams in 5 core subject areas I haven't thought about much since my masters degree 4 years ago, and 5) I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M UP TO FUCKING 5!

    Wish me luck.

Didn't anyone ever tell you it's rude to wave
your brains in the air around those less
    gifted?

By Nate on Friday, August 16, 2002 - 07:40 pm:

hey dude, that's what i do.

    the nlp, not the brains.

Well sem, I figured if patrick could wave his sperm around, I could wave my brains.

d00d, Nate, ever used WordNet? I have to absorb it this weekend...

By Nate on Friday, August 16, 2002 - 09:29 pm:

    no, never have.

i'm not on the research end of the stick, anyway. my focus is on applications of various nlp technologies for customer interaction management.
