For instance: keep feet on pedals. Even if you fear your coasters aren't working, it's better and you have more control than with your feet on the ground. Tonight was my second Zoobomb (zoobomb.org)experience and my second crash during the 7.5 mile downhill run. Both crashes are related to faith in brakes. The first time, two weeks ago, I braked so hard that I fishtailed and went down, hitting my head and scraping my left shoulder, elbow and knee. I still have a bruise on my right thigh from the mixtie bar. My brakes were fucked up pretty badly and the seat was knocked off. I walked it to the end and got a ride home. Whitey is still in the basement. Tonight, I went in a dress, black and white polka dots, same exact clothes as in the picture I put up but my hair was in pigtails to keep my goblin horns in place and I was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt. I lost faith in my brakes and put my feet down and lost control. Both knees are bleeding from multiple cuts, there's skin hanging from a gaping hole in my right hand, almost on the wrist. Skinned elbow and shoulder through the sweatshirt and dirt everywhere. Nothing broken, just a basket that looks like art. Then I got up, got back on the bike to meet everyone who's waiting for me and made the same mistake again. Remember to stand up, brush yourself off and smile. Everything will be okay and you'll feel better. I finished the run wheeling through parking lots and asking Roberta to keep an eye on me. As long as you keep moving nothing stings. Skin heals and wounds and clothes can be washed. Wire can be bent back into shape. And people who finish the run after spills are considered sexy and brave. My cuts were filmed and a boy asked me to go to home depot with him (?) but it's cool. I can play kickball tomorrow. |
