In the vice presidential debate tonight, Cheney was digging into Edwards about his Senate attendance record.

He said to Edwards, "You've got one of the worst attendance records in the United States Senate. Now, in my capacity as vice president, I am the president of the Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight."

Seems that Cheney has a faulty memory. He should have googled first. Check out the first line of this transcript from one of Cheney's speeches:

"CHENEY: Thank you. Thank you very much. Congressman Watts, Senator Edwards, friends from across America and distinguished visitors..."

Oh yeah, they also met when Edwards escorted Elizabeth Dole to her Senate swearing in ceremony...

how about cheney saying they picked him because of his experience and knowledge?

ummmm. . . i seem to recall cheney picked himself.

edwards missed that one, too. a brief comment would have sufficed.

what are the cable news spinners saying? i know the online polls are heavily towards edwards.

CBS "instapoll" results, from 200 undecided voters nationwide:

    "Who won?"

    Edwards: 42 percent

    Cheney: 29 percent

    tie: 29 percent

"Debate improved your opinion of the candidate?"

    Cheney: 29 percent, opinion improved

    Edwards: 58 percent, opinion improved

I thought the moderator was awful. Not one question about the secret energy meetings? WTF?

I don't blame Edwards for missing one Cheney distortion - there were so many. He did nail him on that phony "Kerry voted against weapons systems" meme they trot out, when he pointed out that Cheney as Bush I's Secretary of Defense cut all the programs he was trying to blame Kerry with cutting.

Cheney also brought out the big ol' "You're denigrating our troops" brush from their slime bucket, but I think that's backfiring on them. It's becoming increasingly more evident everytime they say it that it's empty campaign rhetoric.

Another "Poland moment" for the VP is going to be factcheck.com. It seems that domain is owned by...get this...George Soros! Cheney should have said factcheck.org, not .com. :) Factcheck.com now redirects to www.georgesoros.com. Righteous.

By Antigone on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

Ah, Soros doesn't actually own factcheck.com. Here's a good article at ABC News.

By Antigone on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

It gets soooooo much better! The site is down now because the factcheck.org folks use ASP, but here's an excerpt:

"Cheney got our domain name wrong -- calling us 'FactCheck.com' -- and wrongly implied that we had rebutted allegations Edwards was making about what Cheney had done as chief executive officer of Halliburton.

In fact, we did post an article pointing out that Cheney hasn't profited personally while in office from Halliburton's Iraq contracts, as falsely implied by a Kerry TV ad. But Edwards was talking about Cheney's responsibility for earlier Halliburton troubles. And in fact, Edwards was mostly right."

By Antigone on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 - 05:27 pm:

Andrew Sullivan just tears Cheney a new one over the debates:

"IN BRIEF: Boy was I ever wrong. If last Thursday night's debate was an assisted suicide for president Bush, this debate - just concluded - was a car wreck. And Cheney was road-kill. There were times when it was so overwhelming a debate victory for Edwards that I had to look away."

And, more facts are coming out.

When Cheney dug into Edwards for not showing up in the Senate he mentioned, "Now, in my capacity as vice president, I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session." He then claimed that he never met Edwards until the debate, implying Edwards never showed up.

Guess what? Cheney has presided over the Senate TWICE in the last four years. More? Edwards has done it twice too! (Senators rotate in that duty when the Senate president doesn't show...)
