with my credit card

sorabji.com: Why did you do it?: with my credit card
By droopy on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - 01:50 pm:

got a "potential fraud alert" email from discover
card this morning. they wanted me to verify a
purchase: a $234 charge to a place called high
point scientific. it's in new jersey; it
    specializes in telescopes.

i called the fraud department at discovery and
told them i hadn't made that purchase. they said
there were a few others: some dollar charges to
aol and at&t, and one to gap. i had them close the
    account.

as i finished that last paragraph, i got a call
from somebody from high point scientific. they
didn't know about my fraud alert from discovery,
but they thought my purchase looked "sketchy." my
fort worth address matched, but the shipping
address was to a guy named santos in san antonio.
the purchase itself was made from mexico. it was
    for a binocular/camera.

he said there's a fraud triangle. fraudulent
purchases are made from mexico, shipped to someone
in the u.s., and sold on ebay or someplace.

i was a little disappointed. at first it seemed
that at least the fraud was for something fairly
noble like scientific curiosity. now it's just
    plain fraud.

Do you have any idea how they got your credit card information?

By Pepper on Thursday, March 27, 2014 - 09:46 am:

You don't have a lifelock account with them?

By droopy on Friday, March 28, 2014 - 01:40 am:

i rarely use my credit cards. usually jut for
medical supplies. but i suppose there was one shady
purchase i made that might have put my info into
    the wrong hands.

it seems like it was caught in time. i hope it's
    over.

I won't give out my card to waiter/waitress, cause they can copy the number from the card, and I won't let the guy who own the "Square" that is attached to the cellular phone.
I remember at the computer show, a guy had a credit card reader attached to the cellular phone, it was back in the late 90's. I won't trust this. Because anyone who know how to use Linux knows better than that.

Soooo...what was that one shady purchase?

By droopy on Sunday, March 30, 2014 - 04:05 pm:

it isn't so much the purchased item as the place: a
seedy little pawn shop in a latino part of town.
