A few blokes have been posting about how they feel white males are discriminated against. I can see that for the first time in recent history, women and ethnic minorities are being given breaks once only afforded to white males. But the blokes still have most of the cookies from the jar. So why this disenfranchisement? I honestly don't understand it. Is it genuine or just pissing in the wind from your highly-prized standing position?

Seems like both, sem. The common conception on the right is that things are all equal now and that discrimination is no longer a problem. But the anger of white men is understandable in that any group that loses power would be pissed off. Discrimination against anyone in the workplace clearly violates the 14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, but right now it's going on against white males via affirmative action. I'm a 25 year old white male and every black who has grown up in my generation has had the same opportunities as i've had, if not much more because of affirmative action. Only blacks who were alive during at least the 60's can really claim that they have dealt with social injustices and institutional racism. I'm sure older blacks look at the younger generation of blacks today with all their school, job, and scholarship opportunities and wonder why many of them throw it all away by getting into drugs and crime, but that's another story which should be talked about. I'm not some "rich white boy" who was spoon-fed with some silver spoon. I joined the Armed Forces, fought for my country and received the Montgomery GI bill to go to school. I now have a bachelors degree in criminal justice, have years of experience in civilian security and can't even get a job with the federal government as a police officer anywhere. I wonder why I don't get the jobs? Actually I do know, it's because I happen to be a white male and because of my ancestors past actions i'm being punished. There are millions of stories out there about how white males are discriminated against. Most white males aren't raised racist but when they are put through this kind of b.s. i'm sure many of them are being drawn to racism. Many whites will not respect a black person who has a position of respect just because in the back of their mind they are assuming that the black person got the job because of their skin and they don't really deserve the job. Affirmative action is doing more harm than it is doing good. When the vast majority of white males finally get pissed off enough because of this discrimination I guarantee something will be done about it, it's only a matter of time because the anger is really building up. Those of you out there who say that this is good and it's about time that white males get their payback are showing just how racist they really are. There is a big lawsuit against the Department of Housing and Urban Development because of it's systematic discrimination against white males even though minorities are way overproportionate in the Department. I just want to know, at what point will white males say that because of their past social injustices and institutional racism that they now get to be the punishers. It may happen if this discrimination doesn't stop.

At first I was surprised by all the negative feedback, but I really did kind of expect it. Those who left negative remarks have no real rationale or reasoning to refute my argument or challenge me in serious debate so you just say something negative. I think deep down you all know that i'm absolutely right but just don't want to admit it. You would like to just shun my thoughts and feelings away by claiming that i'm somehow "delusional" or "crazy". I'm actually a very social person and very pleasant to be around, but when it comes to my freedoms being violated I understandably will get angry. Well, Ross, here's something for you: you base all your arguments upon one flimsy support - that black people today have the exact same opportunities as you do. That's a pretty hefty claim, and it just sounds like an article of faith that you are using to blame black people for your problems. Why don't you back that up with some facts? You need to demonstrate definitely that black people do not face the obstacles of racism, and the effects of racist policies against them, in the modern world. Even racist policies of 50 years ago still effect the modern community, so take that into account - guess who lived in the neighborhoods demolished for highway construction in the 50s, for example - and then look at rates of black home ownership before and after "urban renewal". You then also need to back up your statement about being punished for your ancestor's actions. Well, black people are still being punished for your ancestor's actions today, while you are still reaping the benefits of having white ancestors. Why people jumped on you is because you went straight to blaming other people for your problems, specifically people who are minorities. In order to claim real racism against you, you need to come up with specific instances where a definitely less-qualifed minority person got a job over you. Then you have to figure in how often do you ever even KNOW who got the job instead of you - I know I've never known. Just because you have a degree and were in the Armed Forces, doesn't make you automatically the best candidate for a job. That's true of every profession. Maybe you should think hard about why you feel entitled to get jobs over minority candidates. You didn't blame a slump in the econonmy, you didn't consider that maybe you weren't the most qualified candidate for the jobs you've applied for, you didn't even factor in nepotism for chrissakes. Face it buddy, if you are going to be a member of the most privileged group of folks in America and try and cry "Racism!" then you better back it up. I'm not saying it doesn't happen - I had a friend (who is white) attend Morehouse College briefly for graduate studies, and he eventually decided to leave because he was discriminated against on the campus because he was white. However, instead of whining about "reverse racism" he took it as a valuable lesson, an opportunity to walk in the other man's shoes that the majority of white men just never get a chance to do, and he came out of it with a mush deeper appreciation of the black experience in America. Too bad you took the easy way out.

I have to say, discriminaton is found towards every group,... some more than others. I am a white male, I experience racial discrimination on a regular basis.I am in high school and ride a majority black school bus to school every day. Days are few and far between that whites are not slurred on that mourning bus. I have to "fight" to get a seat. My sister has been sexually harrassed on several occations on that bus... it disgusts me. I have to find a seat near the front empty so that I can sit with her. I informed the police and security on various occations nearly in tears for my sister. Nothing was ever done. Let me inform you that I am a quite and tolerant person. I have a black girl friend presently, and we are happy together. I do not mean to bash anyone, I only need to tell the facts. Whites are slurred more often in my presence than any other race. I is true that minorities get bonus points on tests to get into jobs. Some minorities not as qualified as whites are geting the same jobs. This is a good thing for the minorities, but a rip off for people like me: poor, white, male, smart, skilled. I am not saying any race is better than another (God knows I have to say that because I am a white male), I'm just saying that it is racial discrimination. No race should have an unfair advantage over another, including whites. The same thing applies to college grants and scholarships. Some minorities more wealthy economiclly than me have an unfair advantage over me. I beleve advantages should be based on economic status not race. That is what disgusts me. Why is everyone so racist?... white, black, and everything in btween or outside.

I have been studying this aspect within the whole spectrum of education, cultures in the USA and the educational processes in the USA. but..... there was rarely any other characters on Friends except the 5 main ones, they didn't seem to show much of their outside life..... i mean, if you made a sitcom of my life that didn't follow me to work or outside much, you could assume the same things. I started reading the thread from the bottom up, so I didn't notice the date. And in my experience, trolls like Ross always return to their favorite bridge sooner or later. I just wish I'd seen this thread back when it originated. And Patrick -- you know I wasn't referring to You. Or Sem. Or Agatha. Or any of the other decent, thoughtful Whitefolks I know here.
