    Is it art?

By heather on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 08:21 pm:

    what is art

By Markus on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 09:51 pm:

Art is my neighbor. He's a little obsessive about his lawn, but he's a nice guy. Gives me free firewood.

By semillama on Sunday, February 13, 2000 - 12:15 am:

Art stands for Automatic Response transmission.

What happens is, the green energy demons who live under your eyelids have to suck their life forse out of retinal stimulation, so they encouraged early man to spend mre time making random splashes of ochre on rocks, until they started to take form. The more interesting the "art", teh more time one spends looking at it, and the more retinal vibes the green energy demons recieve. It's kind of like a symbiotic relationship.

We just got a new book on Jenny Holzer at our library. She does neat stuff -- art focused on words. She's used [the scrolling strip signs used to project stock information....you know what I'm talking about?] to project her truisms. One I liked was "It's better to be naive than jaded," which she projected in Times Square.

She also had a series of photographs of sentences written on skin in blue ink.

I like her. I like words.

Another artist who uses words in his work is Jimmie Durham. (We just got one of his books in at the library, too. It's a wonder I get any work done when I have all these art books to look at.)

He has a painting (I think it's a self-portrait) that has something like "Look, he writes on his paintings. Does he think he's something special?" written at the top. The bottom half of the canvas is a solid splotch of red paint. At the very bottom, he's scrawled, "Don't worry, little words, I would never cover you with red paint."

    I like his work, too.

I wonder, though, if what makes Jenny Holzer an "artist" and not a poet is due to what she does with her words, not the words themselves.
