    SACD

    are they worthwhile?

    have you heard one?

By dave. on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 01:32 am:

never heard of it but considering mp3 technology filters out sounds we can't hear, what sounds can we hear that we aren't getting? without an eq?

personally, i can tell the difference between a low quality and a high quality mp3 but i can't hear a difference between a cd and an lp that can't be accounted for by the equipment and source. sounds like a product for audiophiles and they're a pack of nutsacs.

I heard one at Best Buy. I would hold off a little bit, music is going to start coming out on DVD disks very soon.

By Nate on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 11:01 am:

SACD is music on DVD disks.

i like the multi-channel idea, but i wonder how many of the albums that are mixed or re-mixed for multi-channel really take advantage of it.

i dunno. betamax is why i wouldn't buy one right now.

I randomly bought a DVDA album a while back. They can be played in regular dvd players and dvd-audio players. It's two different copies of the music though. The 5.1 audio in this case was only available with dvd-audio players while the dvd-video section just had dolby.

I don't have a dvd audio player. I've never even seen one.

Too many standards. Is SACD the format that will also play in a regular cd player?

By TBone on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 11:38 am:

And DVDA always makes me think of the Double-Vaginal-Double-Anal scene from Orgazmo.

By spunky on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 11:47 am:

No, they do make a SACD Player for your home theatre system, and most newer DVD players will play SACD disks as well. The thing about DVD players is that they are configured with a software load, so one of these days they may make a CD that we can use to "upgrade" our DVD players.
    The higher end ones anyway.
I am sure they will not bother with the APEX model unless it is an industry standard.

Oh, and for the record, Digital Versatile Disks have already had thier "BetaMax", it was called DivX. Not divx.com, that is still around.
This would be Circuit City's Flop

By Nate on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 01:29 pm:

DivX was just a bad idea, not a competing standard.

my DVD player plays DVDA but not SACD. I forgot about DVDA. I want music intentionally mixed to 5.1.

intentionally, as in, not an afterthought.

By patrick on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 01:51 pm:

    whats DVDA?

By spunky on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 01:56 pm:

    Digital Versatile Disk Audio

    or

    Damn Viagra Duped Ass!

By TBone on Thursday, August 22, 2002 - 03:25 pm:

The DVD-A I got was recorded/mixed in 5.1 to begin with. It's an album of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. A really great Physics teacher back in Billings used to play with them from time to time. Apparently Bela Fleck mixed the album himself.

I'd like to hear the 5.1, but I'd need a new player.

    bela fleck is sweet.

DVD just means DVD now, spunky. it was once digital video disc or digital versatile disc but now it is just DVD.
