I am so out of shape. I only have 20% body fat, so I don't need to lose weight at all, but I need to get my ass fit. Gravity is taking hold of my body and I don't like it one bit. Probably my own fault for not taking better care of my body.

Here's my dilemma. As I am getting older, my arthritis is getting much much worse. I used to work out all of the time, step aerobics, strength training, what have you. I can't so much as jog anymore, so running is out and step aerobics are out. I don't know where to begin, what workouts to consider, that I could do at home (I don't have a car during the day right now). I can't use stair climbers or anything like that because my knees and hips are too fucked up from the arthritis and I don't have a clue what workouts I can to without fucking up my joints completely. I have done some yoga and continue to do it, but it hasn't had any effect on me whatsoever. I need other ideas of ways to work out at home without killing my knees and hips.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

I have chondromalacia in both of my knees, so I know what kind of pain an overzealous workout can cause.

My doctor recommended biking (on the road or stationary), elliptical machines, low-impact step aerobics with small steps....things of that nature. The key is to strengthen your legs (especially your quadriceps) to take the pressure off your knees, but stick to exercises that keep both feet on the floor. If you do squats and lunges, take care to stick to proper form.

I've been walking to work this week.

I have lost all of my fitness since the foot injury of 2002.

I must get back to the gym.

    Can you power walk?

By moonit on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 06:24 pm:

    Like Susan Power?

I walk pretty fast. It takes me about 30 minutes to walk to work... but I don't do that arm swinging thing, thats kinda scary.

Power walk. I haven't been able to do that in ages. Like high school. My body is so retarded, I swear.

Today was awesome, though. The weather here was amazing and I opened everything up and something about the fresh air everywhere just gave me so much energy.

I wished I had some free weights to work with, but I don't have any anymore.

    Use canned food.

yeah, the weather this past weekend was phenomenal. i ran 7 miles yesterday. and then i died. but lemon cake brought me back from the dead.

i suggest starting with vigorous walking 4-5 days a week. start with two miles, working your way up.

you can lift weights too. buy 3 lb, 5 lb, and 10 lb dumbells and do some exercises at home. don't lift anything heavy and don't lift to exhaustion.

just start easy, and if your body starts to hurt too much from even light or moderate exercise, consult a doctor.

the trouble with things like arthritis is that if you remain inactive because of the pain, it will only get worse.

    Try Keigels. That shouldn't hurt your joints.{ And just might make that special person in your life VERY happy.}

i didnt realize one can suffer from arthritus when your still a spring chicken.

By eri on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 12:13 pm:

I was diagnosed with arthritis at 17. I have always fought it. I try to keep as active as possible, but there are certain things that just kill after a very short period of time.

Walking wouldn't be bad except that I can't take Micki with me. She's too big for her stroller (and wouldn't have it) and too slow to walk with for more than a block.

The canned food sounds like a good idea until I can get my hands on some free weights.

I think I am going to do some yoga today. I found some old Tae Bo tape and I might pop that in for some extra cardio, but I don't know. I don't need to build muscle below the waist, but rather tighten up the muscle I have already.

Today is another perfectly gorgeous day. I want to go swimming badly but the pools aren't heated and I am sure they will be freezing.

I have been told that taking Devil's Claw suppliments can help arthritis.

CAn anyone confirm, or refute this? My mother has extremely bad arth. and is looking for all the help she can get.
