rationalize that! A brown cloud comprised of nearly 80% man made gases and particles. Nahhhhhhh Global warming is just a crackpot T H E O R Y !! |
Patrick? The cover article is about how one consequence of global warming which is not unlikely is that the massive amount of melting freshwater from the Artic ice cap from increased temperatures may be enough to shut down the Gulf Stream, which could result in another Ice Age, much worse than the Little Ice Age which ended a couple hundred years ago. The article is not up on the website yet, so anyone interested in a good read should check it out at the store. |

The so-called "hole," actually an area of thinner than normal ozone, was measured at 6 million square miles (15.6 million square kilometers) in September. That compares with around 9 million square miles (23.4 million square kilometers) on September measurements over the last six years, according to researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Aeronautics and Space Agency. While ozone at ground level is considered a pollutant, the layer of ozone high in the stratosphere is vital to life because it blocks dangerous radiation coming from the sun. Thinning of the ozone layer could lead to a rise in skin cancer, experts warn. Aerosols and other chemicals are blamed for the thinning, and treaties banning those ingredients are expected to help the layer recover over time. *****This year's improvement was attributed to warmer than normal temperatures around the edge of the polar vortex,****** or circular wind pattern that forms annually in the stratosphere over Antarctica, according to Paul Newman, a lead ozone researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. . |

the dramatic nature of its performance in a years time is plenty evidence to conclude that whatever is happening is quite volatile. whats to say it wont reopen 10x bigger next year?? anyone who cites this as evidence that global warming doesnt exist is pretty damn foolish. |

hole over the Antarctic may slam shut within four decades. Tatsuya Nagashima of the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Ibaraki simulated the gases seeping into the ozone layer, 10 to 15 miles high in the stratosphere. He found that declining levels of chlorine from recently banned chlorofluorocarbons should enable the ozone to return to early-1980s levels by 2040. But another study, conducted by physicist Drew Shindell of NASA Goddard Institure for Space Studies in New York City, suggests that recovery of the ozone layer will be delayed 10 to 20 years by rising levels of two gases - methane and nitrous oxide- that also contribute to greenhouse warming. At low latitudes, methane in the stratosphere breaks down into hydrogen oxides, which attack ozone. Nitrous oxide can decompose to form ozone-eating nitrogen oxides. "In 60 or 70 years, there should be no more depletion from chlorine, but since there will be all these greenhouse gases, it will not look like it used to in the 1970s," Shindell says. Fortunately, the ozone layer should still be robust enough to provide protection from solar ultraviolet rays. -Josie Glausiusz, "Ozone Glee and Gloom" Discover, November 2002 look! An action we took to slow global warming and help the ozone hole may have worked! And conservatives are using this as evidence that there wasn't a problem in the first place! |
