The most prescient prediction made Friday night, in the wake of an incredibly cynical Gray Davis signing into law a measure allowing illegal immigrants to receive state driver's licenses, came from Nick Warner. Mr. Warner is legislative director of the California State Sheriffs' Association. His prediction? "Twelve months from now, a California driver's license will not get you on an airplane or help you get a rental car outside California." Why? Because it will be too easy for anyone — anyone at all — to simply walk into the DMV and, armed with nothing more than a statement saying they are who they say they are, be issued the license. The way things are right now, a driver's license issued by the State of California carries certain backup documentation, and thus is accepted not only by airlines and car rental agencies, but by other state governments and the federal government as well, as proof of identification. No more. Our credibility has been so badly diluted by Davis and the reigning Left in Sacramento that no responsible agency or person outside this state can trust us. For the past 11 years, the Department of Motor Vehicles required people applying for a driver's license to produce a Social Security number. But the governor dumped that requirement. And it's worse. The security people in Washington, D.C., now have a monumentally more difficult task in ferreting out those bent on doing us harm. ************************************************** Folks, this is truly madness. How can it be otherwise, when the government of the largest state in the Union decides to reward people who break the law by giving them a tool to make it easier to break more laws? ************************************************** Only foolish, self-deluding people refuse to admit why the governor signed the bill. He wants to avoid recall so desperately that nothing — not ethics, not sanity, not honesty, not common sense — will get in his way. Here's the bottom line. Gray Davis has managed to wreck California's economy, so badly that Wall Street doesn't trust us and has reduced our credit rating to junk bond status. Californians don't trust Gray Davis, which is why he's about to lose the recall. And, because of the bill he signed Friday, the rest of the United States doesn't trust Californians anymore. And Davis doesn't get it. |
