A chemical plant exploded two days ago in Ft Worth. (a.k.a. Droopyville) I think I've noted before here, there has been a steady stream of semi trucks exploding, hitting bridge supports, or both for the entire summer. Also, about once a month, an oil refinery in Houston explodes. Now this.

But the kicker is the advice they give for people near the plant after the explosion:

"Fort Worth health officials said the risk to residents' health was small, but advised those nearby to stay indoors with windows closed and air conditioners off."

Stay inside, with the AIR CONDITIONER OFF. This is Texas in the summer. Luckily it was relatively cool on Thursday (i.e. 85 degrees) but usually it's 95-100, and has gotten up to 102 so far this summer. And they want people to stay inside with the windows shut and the air conditioner off? If the risk is small, why should they subject themselves to the definate risk of locking themselves in a house oven? (It can easily get to 120 degrees in a closed house in the summer without AC.)

i was close enough to that to hear the explosion and see the black smoke rising in the north. but not close enough to be affected. though a few people around here insisted they could smell something funny. of course, we're in the city on prettied-up toxic land with a stable to the west of us and a dogfood factory to the east. funnier than that?
