A big hole and lots of cops

On the WAYD board, I mentioned that I saw the Pentagon last night.

I had to see it. At 8:30 last night, I drove south on 495 and took the 395 North exit into DC. The Pentagon is on the left of the road when you go that direction, at such an angle that you can see the damaged side if you look straight ahead at it. Because of the angle of the road, it was hard to see the building over the highway divider, but for a few moments you can see the damage. I saw it with my own eyes.

395 takes you into SW Washington. I ended up driving right past the White House. It was dark, and I wasn't paying particular attention to where I was turning (I was heading towards the Washington Monument, so I knew I was in a safe area).

I suddenly became aware of police cars everywhere. At one intersection, there were police cars on each of the four corners, plus policemen on bicycles on the streets. I was nervous for a few moments, and then I noticed the big old White building that I was coasting by on my right. (Yes, that's when I called myself an idiot.) At the corner of Pennsylvania Ave. and 17th (where the Corcoran is) there were two groups of cops, about 10 to each group.

There were other cars on the road behind me, and no one said anything as I passed them, so I assume it was okay for me to be driving there and then.

It was spooky. Right here, right here, I thought. I'm right here.
