see too many new things. yesterday i was downtown and ran across a dead blue grosbeak on the sidewalk. today i saw a blue jay feeding on the carcass of a dead mockingbird and then, a few blocks later, a mother killdeer taking her fledgling out for a walk in a parking lot. my sister was in cancun, mexico this weekend. my brother-in-law, not known for holding a steady job, somehow earned (or won) a trip to mexico in his current job. my sister sent a picture from her window: a yellow pillar, palm trees, the beach. my 72 year old mother had road-tripped to marfa, texas. dusty, funky, artsy place. she sent me a picture from her hotel window: an alley, some white-washed houses, a white volkswagen beetle and a volkswagen van. a friend named joe sent me a picture from austin, tx. it was an old, rust-brown truck. i guess it was a work truck: it had a ladder and some tools in the back and a makeshift roof over the bed. the rook was decorated with randomly placed bunces of flowers. on the roof of the truck, on the drivers side was a cat. it sat there in that regal way cats do with its rump down, forelegs in front like pillars, its face impassive. on the top part of the truck's windshield, down and to the left of the cat, was a bumper sticker that read: "fish naked." |
