I was bitten by Hobo Spider a day or two ago. We're moving boxes out of the basement of our old house and into a storage unit since our new apartment won't have room for all the kipple. Our basement is so thoroughly infested with these damn things that all the sticky traps we placed last year are completely covered in BIG spiders, and any sticky piece of boxing tape that wasn't stuck down is also covered in big spiders.

This is what happens when they bite you. Similar to a Brown Recluse bite. My left middle finger is in the numb, blistering phase.

Goddamn I hate those fuckers. Aggressive things, too. I was told to take an antihistamine to reduce the amount of tissue that dies. Damn stuff makes me groggy. Tapioca brain. Bleagh.

By semillama on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 03:39 pm:

Does it look like that? The bite i mean.

I pretty much have my spider problem licked, I think. Nothing dangerous lived with me, I hope.

By crimson on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 03:57 pm:

we've got black widows out the ass here. this is the buggiest place i've ever lived in. spiders galore & a plague of grasshoppers. wasps, too. all manner of creeping, obnoxious things. i loathe bugs, but spiders are the worst. i've watched plenty of people's skin rot away from spider bites. there's a spider the size of cincinnati that lives outside my front door & i hope he just continues staying on his side of the web.

By Hal on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 03:59 pm:

Hobo's are aggressive little fucks, they are also known as "Aggressive House Spiders" and they can get fucking huge, like the size of my fist if they live long enough with a good diet.

They will charge you, I'm guessing the only thought in their head is. "Hummmm DINER, and a BIG dinner at that."

    Fucks.

By TBone on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 04:40 pm:

It doesn't look like that picture yet, but it's on its way.

Although it seems to be progressing more slowly than the description on that site, so maybe I got a smaller dose than some.

By Nate on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 07:18 pm:

yeah, according to that web site and to the best of my knowledge hobo's never get larger than an inch.

i have plenty of spiders in my house. i don't mind them one bit.

there tends to be a few giant ones who make webs in the corners above my showers. i say hi to them every morning.

By Platypus on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 10:55 pm:

We have black widows and brown recluses here too. The spiders and I have pretty much reached a truce, though.

We don't get many in the shower, although in my old digs there was a frog that lived next to the hot water tap.

By semillama on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 08:47 am:

I fully support haing frogs and lizards in your apartment. I think it's a good idea.

By Spider on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 10:47 am:

There were big-ass spiders (as well as a Spider with a big ass) in my last apartment. Big mamas the size of a 50-cent piece with thick black legs....I don't know what they're called. One morning I awoke to find that I was facing the wall and one of these spiders was a few inches away from my face. I was UP after that, boy.

By Spider on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 11:01 am:

Also in my last apartment, I found a small slug crawling up the bathroom tile a few times. Crickets and these other small jumping bugs that look like spiders with too many legs and/or tons of antennae radiating from their bodies. Those bastards could jump a few feet in the air...reducing me to a whimpering, broom-wielding wreck on more than one occasion.

By Hal on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 11:36 am:

    I fucking hate spiders...

    But not you spider.

By heather on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 02:33 pm:

the spiders in my room don't show up in view very often, but they bite me occasionally and i still have an itchy place on my hand from last week.

By pez on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 03:20 pm:

i once killed a mouse with a broom... i was a shaking mess for the rest of the day.

By Platypus on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 04:22 pm:

We have banana slugs in the new house, I've discovered. They don't like flannel pillowcases, but egyptian cotton...oooh boy! I like banana slugs. Big, yellow, harmless, and kind of nice.

Just don't lick the bottom of one.

By pez on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 04:41 pm:

    why, did you?

By TBone on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 04:47 pm:

My first experience with a banana slug was when I asked my Aunt who we were visiting in Washington what that big nasty thing I had just stepped on was.

Not a lot of slugs here. I've seen maybe 2, and they'd fit on a penny.

By Nate on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 04:54 pm:

    it's no different than

    oh nevermind.

By patrick on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 05:11 pm:

its good to be 3-4 stories high. rarely any bugs.

just the occasional silverfish hangin round the bathroom.

By pez on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 05:15 pm:

i ate a peach on my break yesterday. i'd brought it from home, washed and wrapped in a paper towel.

so i unwrap the thing and out falls an earwig.

earwigs are everywhere here during the summer. i once decided to live half the summer in a tree next to my house, so i had dolls and blankets and things up there for weeks. i finally take them down and there are earwigs all over.

    yuk.

By Antigone on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 06:08 pm:

Ahhhhhh, marching band. Those were the days...

By patrick on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 06:18 pm:

i wish mp3 had the eyes wide shut soundtrack. i really want to hear those songs by jocelyn pook. those creepy tunes during the masquerade.

im completely convinced that movie, is one of Kubrick's greatest films. soundtrack, acting, camerwork, story....everything.

By Nate on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 06:21 pm:

yeah, it was so much better than Full Metal Jacket or The Shining.

and especially better than that stupid ass fucking dr. strangelove movie.

By patrick on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 06:39 pm:

Clockwork Orange and Eyes are his two best.

Full Metal Jacket was great but it seemed unfinished.

The Shining was good....but just a creepy movie.

    Strangelove, to me, was hilarious.

    Lolita was fantastic

and of course 2001 was amazing too.

you should see, if you havent, Killers Kiss...thats a great early kubrick

im thankful my video store has the great directors in their own section so you can look at the collection of a filmmaker

By Kubrickabra on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 06:56 pm:

    KUBRICKIBRA!

By wisper on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 07:10 pm:

Dr. Strangelove was great. Eyes Wide Shut was great.
Lolita had me laughing until my sides hurt. I don't think a movie about a pedophile is supposed to be that goddamn funny. Holy shit it's good.

    ----

please, let's not talk about earwigs again. The heatwave seems to have killed them all.

By semillama on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 08:41 am:

I had one crawling on me yesterday. I flicked it off. Later, I saw it (hopefully the same one) near my trash can and squooshed it.

    sorry.

I liked Dr. Strangelove. It was damn funny. Peter Sellars was awesome.

I also liked Eyes Wide Shut a lot. I think a lot of people dissed it because people forgot that it's ok for a movie to make you feel like that and that it's ok to enjoy that feeling.
