Supreme Court Judge Brian Martin said Robert Joe Wagner, 31, and John Justin Bunting, 37, were in the business of killing for pleasure. Judge Martin stated: "Both of you are incapable of true rehabilitation. I'm satisfied that both of you derived pleasure from the physical acts of killing and the violence and torture that preceded some of the killings. Bunting was convicted earlier this year of 11 murders while Wagner pleaded guilty to three murders and was convicted of four others. Both were sentenced last month to life in prison, and the hearing in Adelaide was over whether they should be granted the possibility of parole. The judge ruled against that possibility. Arguing for leniency, Wagner told the judge he killed paedophiles to protect children. "Paedophiles were doing terrible things to children and innocent children were being damaged," Wagner said. "The authorities did nothing about it, I was very angry, somebody had to do something about it. I decided to take action, I took that action." Bunting and Wagner were found guilty of torturing most of their victims and stuffing their dismembered bodies in acid-filled barrels hidden in an abandoned bank vault in Snowtown, southern Australia. The trial heard the killers ate the flesh of one victim. Prosecutors said the 20-month killing spree was fuelled by a hatred of paedophiles and homosexuals.
