You've just gotta read this. It gets crazy on the 4th page or so.

    linky

By Antigone on Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 07:07 pm:

Oops. It's congressman Foley, not Fowler. :)

So, the title should be, "Holy Foley!" :)

By Spider on Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 07:21 pm:

    Heh, READER DISCRETION STRONGLY ADVISED.

Warning: the words you are about to see may shake
your faith in the goodness of humanity.

Jeez, the spelling alone could do that to you.

By wisper on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 03:16 am:

A congressional page must be at least 16 years old.
I recognize that what he did was illegal, but i don't consider it wrong or immoral.

...actually scratch that. Upon further research, the age of consent in DC *is* 16. This is completely fucked. The way they're reporting it, i expected the "kids" to be all of 9 or 10.
    Freaky? yes. Illegal? no.
    wtf.

By wisper on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 03:20 am:

seriously, if i'm missing some angle on this story, please point it out to me.

By dave. on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 04:15 am:

i wonder what was foley's position on clinton and lewinsky? i'm sure it was veeeeery critical.

as for the age of consent/jurisdiction issue, how does that work on the internets when it crosses state lines?

at this point, if we could get republicans to resign for getting busted petting cats fur the wrong way, i'm all for it.

    but really, wisper

1 it's an abuse of a position of power

2 it's hypocritical on so many levels based on foley's party's position on homosexuality, and "morality" as well as his chairing of a comittee on child exploitation issues.

3 house republican leadership knew about this for nearly a year, probably much longer, and did nothing.

4 it might just be illegal

5 his im syntax and typos are fucking creepy and predatory.

By J on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 04:20 am:

I'm all down with what Dave said, especially number two.

By Spider on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 10:39 am:

#5 bugs me. It's almost like the typos are done on purpose,
to make the kid think Foley is on his level and not a powerful
senator who could crush him with a word. This implies
    deliberation and planning.

I've recently heard that some states have age-of-consent
laws regarding homosexual sex in particular, and that
age could be different from heterosexual sex in the
same state. Anyone know if this is true?

By Spider on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 10:44 am:

Besides, even if the kid's of age, it's still skeevy --
middle-aged senator (+ cast fetish!) + high school kid.

By wisper on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 03:42 pm:

"and that age could be different from heterosexual sex in the same state"

This is true, DC is not one of them.

By Antigone on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 08:03 pm:

"i wonder what was foley's position on clinton and lewinsky?"
    heh

By Antigone on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 08:12 pm:

wisper, the angle is that Foley was co-chair of the congressional caucus that's supposed to protect children from predators, and specifically internet predators.

Age of consent in DC is 18. linky See § 22-3020 line (2)

But the age of consent in DC doesn't matter. He was in Florida, and the kid was in Lousiana.

    linky

That, and there's a 40 year difference between Foley and the kid.

By Antigone on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 08:15 pm:

    Louisiana

    §81.3. Computer-aided solicitation of a minor

    A. Computer-aided solicitation of a minor is committed when a person eighteen years of age or older knowingly contacts or communicates, through the use of electronic textual communication, with a person who has not yet attained the age of eighteen or a person reasonably believed to have not yet attained the age of eighteen, for the purpose of or with the intent to persuade, induce, entice, or coerce the person to engage or participate in sexual conduct...

By agatha on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 08:29 pm:

That's just fucking wrong. What a pig.

By semillama on Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 08:49 pm:

Add another log to the fire the "traditional values" party keeps
    building round its feet...

By dave. on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 12:42 am:

exactly, spider. except that foley's a congressman, not a senator, and congressmen are notoriously more bourgeois than their senatorial counterparts.

either way, this guy drafts legislation. that chatroom crap is contrived and manipulative. foley is a creep. i hope he thinks about suicide every day until he dies.

By Dr Pepper on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 01:24 am:

    How is everyone tonight?

By wisper on Monday, October 2, 2006 - 03:45 am:

Ah, the old 4 year age gap for minors thingy :/
Ageofconsent.com doesn't always list such specifics.
