sorabji.com: Obscure Classical Composers: Zelenka
By Jeffrey Scott Holland on Thursday, January 1, 1998 - 01:08 am:
Jan Zelenka is pretty obscure. It's a shame that J.S.Bach is a demigod while Zelenka languishes in obscurity. Edgard Varese is another obscuro I'm fond of, though he at least has a certain amount of hipness with the Zappa-heads and what's left of the avant-garde classical crowd. Is Stockhausen considered obscure? Probably not.

On second thought, if Rochberg and Xenakis are not obscure, forget everything I just said. I think I'm outta my league.

I just looked at the times on the foregoing messages. You think fast, kid. You'll move up in the leagues right smartly.

    Christoph Graupner 1683-1760
Nine years student of Johann Kuhnau at Thomaskiche in Leipzig,
Graupner went on to become court composer at Darmstadt, and was in 1723 offered
the position of kantor (the post also offered to Tellemann and eventually taken by J.S. bach)
but declined.Graupner composed many cantatas, for which he is most known, but also
composed operas and chamber compostions.I confess I have never heard his music,as it is
very hard to find, but I have heard many brillaint descriptions of his music, extolling its virtues
    and bemoaning its obscurity.
