though many parts of the city looked exactly the same way in the late 80's and early 90's, during a period that will be remembered in US history as a time of national prosperity. in the years shortly after earning my driver's license, friends and i used to cruise the city, particularly the west side, staring out the windows at brokedown palaces like tourists with a hollywood stars residence map. the only difference between now and then is how much people notice and how widespread and deep the desolation is. fact is, though, not much has change in detroit in the last 70 years, now it's just a media spectacle. |
