As a recovering alcoholic i think what i enjoyed about both of these books was the amount of drinking going on in them. Doesn't hurt that both authors were raging alcoholics themselves. Both books changed my life and i love them alcohol or not. Poor Jack died right down the street here in St. Pete.

What do you do when you've read everything ever written by all your favourite authors? I've read complete Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Hardy, Ayn Rand, George Orwell, I have to admit that I didn't read all of Dostoevsky's works, I couldn't start "The Devils" and "The Idiot". Every five or ten years I can read a book over again, but I can't find anything else that is equally engaging for me. Do you have any recommendations?

If you like the classics..which you seem to...try Graham Greene, Thornton Wilder, G B Shaw, John Mortimer, Evelyn Waugh (especially "Brideshead Revisted"), and I'm presuming you've already read Henry Miller and if you haven't, then you bloody well should. Herman Hesse's "The Glass Bead Game" is up there as well...it's a tough read but you will remember it for years to come.

Plus, try some poetry...like William Blake or Elizabeth Barrett Browning. No one ever seems to read whole poetry books anymore, but they're delicious in the bath.

nate, stop. you're making me feel uneducated. i'm trying to concentrate on the literature talk, and all i can do is laugh about "i love them alcohol." ha! why is that so fucking funny?

The Sun Also Rises, i did my senior thesis on that book in high school. just the other day someone asked me to name my favorite book. i couldn't name one, but i named three, in no meaningful order:

    The Sun Also Rises
    The Color Purple
    Generation X

ask me next week i'd probably give a different answer.

in fact, i was also thinking of that book quite a few weeks ago. when i saw that porn, Disco Dolls in Hot Skin 3D, it occured to me that its plot was actually a variation on The Sun Also Rises.

    no. seriously.
