so scary i wouldn't even begin to tell you. written by a british journalist, john pilger, focusing mainly, i grant you, on the uk, but there's enough uncovered bullshit to keep you all happy for months. so to speak.

i was going to try to conveey how deep all that shit goes, but why try? there's a book you can read.

I need escapism, not this shit. I know all I need to know about us sheep and our shepards. What I don't need are details. I'm too good at turning a good mood into a bad one based on my own perceptions of how we're being pillaged. Do I really need to go into detail about why I hate x-mas, why I hate insurance, why I hate politics? Godammit, my only wish is that it'll all come around and bite their own asses off. I just don't even want to hear it anymore. Talk about every cigarette taking 5 minutes off my life. I swear, every time I learn of another way I'm being fucked does a carton of smokes worth of killing. Give me a good sci-fi novel, a space opera or a not-too-distant-future tale. Iain Banks, Dan Simmons, Neil Stephenson, William Gibson. Hell, even P. K. Dick, A. E. VanVogt, Robert Silverberg, John Brunner. Much respect to Noam Chomsky but I won't touch the stuff.

I can't believe I mis-spelled shepherd. Maybe I was thinking of the astronaut.

Interesting little coda to your next-to-last missive, Dave: Dan Simmons was my sixth-grade teacher. He was one of those teachers that changes the whole course of your life. Because of him I decided that I wanted to be a writer. We still exchange real (old fashioned, slo-mail) letters.
