I thought one interesting theme to an intitial tape exchange would be a tape of music by bands that the exchanger is fairly sure the other person(s) haven't heard of. if any one is intereested, post here or email me. |
mostly a NYC-based hip hop/jazz/funk/spoken word fusion kinda thing with lots of fwip-chicka-wah-wah. i love getting music in the p.o. box. beats the hell out of overdue bills and governmental hate mail. |
i CAN promise to unearth the stuff i'm sure you haven't turned onto, even though it's prolly already in your cultural musicalexicon. A disclaimer, thoug, one Swine is aware of: I am the anti-funk, a white hole of funk if you will. |
I also can't promise the "never heard before" thing. However, I do make mixes to order, so if you're looking for a mix for a certain occasion or mood or long road trip or whatever...talk to me. As for funk: have any of y'all heard of Trouble Funk? I can give you some of that, too. |
I like the certain mood idea. How about a tape of tunes you happen to listen to while scrolling through message boards? or stuff you feel is appropriate for rainy days ( i personally get stuck in the office on rainy days, which means paperwork, writing and file organizing, and could use fresh vibes to dull the pain). I also can make tapes to order. I have lots of "modern rock", reggae, punk, some hip hop, some funk (not very much though), metal, world music, and a good deal of assorted bands that don't seem to fit any catergory at all. I'll be contacting y'all in the next couple days, as I need to hit the sack. |
i've got some stuff he did with the Last Poets and the U.S. Funk Mob, but i need to check out some of his Marley and Miles remixes. my collection is mostly classic jazz, afro-jazz, funk, soul, reggae, blues, dub, hip hop, and fusion. i've got some rock, but not much... and i've heard of Trouble Funk but have never listened to them. you funk me and i'll funk you back. |
Spirit of the West this friday. WOOHOO!!! The object of my affection has never heard of them (what a shock) and yet he still makes an effort to clear his schedual and go along with me. What a peach. |
I doubt we have anything that you folks haven't heard of. But that doesn't mean we can't contribute something. |
I have made my interest in the tape trade to the appropriate parties. |
sorry. |
i've heard of moxy fruvous...yummy yummy yummy. i love me some canadian bands. |
I can program a VCR, retile a bathroom, uproot a tree, and fix a lawnmower, too. Can I be in the boys' club now? |
Shoot. Now who's casting aspersions? Sorry about that, ladies. |
this is after she jumps on the roof to chuck the tiles at a bunch of halbred wielding fly through the air motherfuckers. i think she was some sort of kung fu nun or something. |
every watch the iron chef speaking of wacky cable programming |
me and mom used to curl up on the couch and watch that and home shopping club reruns when i was just a wee girl. you're bringing up horrid memories. i burnt my macaroni and cheese yesterday. i can pee my name in snow. doesn't that make me male? |
what can you all offer? Oh yea, also various odds and ends from my dueSouth soundtracks. Which range from incredibly soft, to the somewhat hard. no funk though. I'm not down with the funk. |
sides, you know moxy fruvous. you have to be cool. email me. i dont suppose there's any tom waits addicts in here? |
Damn that work for interfering in my sorabji time grrrr. anyway, I'll send you some stuff you've definetly never heard off! |
What can I offer? Well, here's a small sample. This is what I've been listening to in the past couple days: Bjork, Moby, Nation of Ulysses, The Make-up, Helium, Elysian Fields, Swans, Tool, Morphine, Tom Waits, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jeremy Enigk, Foetus, Goldie, Slint, Calexico, Cop Shoot Cop, Girls Against Boys, the Jesus Lizard, Here, Old 97s, Modest Mouse, and the Ninja Cuts 3 comp: Funkungfusion. |

i have social distortion's "mommy's little monster" on vinyl somewhere between pennsylvania and seattle. i used to have a birthmark on the underside of my johnson, but now it's gone. maybe i should go see a doctor. |
we used to watch that a lot in high school. there was this brain damaged canadian punk in one of those scenes that we used to trip on constantly. "AHHH DAAA BAAA PUNK WOCK!!!!" the guy was like the punk rock elephant man or some shit. crazy. i want to get the swans' "children of god" again and sample that song where big dark and gloomy keeps bellowing "THE SEX IN YOUR SOUL WILL DAMN YOU TO HELL!" we always wanted to loop that and play it through the highschool PA system, but none of us could ever get anywhere near the control board without getting busted. i always regretted not being able to pull that off. hey man, i just found my birthmark! |
"AHHH DAAA BAAA PUNK WOCK!!!!" HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
You would think that the fact that you're all so crazy about him would make me want to hear him. Instead I just feel like dancing around saying evil things about him and watching you all explode. So, uh...he's good, eh? |
tom waits being the shit is nothing anyone has to defend-- it's established. anything you say to the contrary just makes you look... sad. |
as far as my balls go, it's kind of a "six degrees of separation" thing. everything eventually relates back to the nutsack. and no, they don't do "moon river". but they will drop a kickin' rendition of "squirt my squirrel" if ya rub 'em right. |
anyone want anything from me, click my name and let me know, right? |
i just can't get into it. docta llama: i got you covered. |
barrett is my fav beatle |
i wasn't into the music as much as i was just intrigued by the recordings. it was like listening to someone going progressively insane until you were just hearing a madman awkwardly strumming in a really bizarre time signature and muttering shit like "i need... you... but... you're running... away... from... me... help... me... to... love... me... help... me...." weird, sad, horrible shit. i should try to find those tapes next time i'm back at my parents' house. |
i didn't know the guys in government issue, i just met the guitarist a couple of times one summer. i think the stuff on the tapes is mostly outtakes and unreleased singles. anyway, if i can find that shit you're welcome to it. |
Nate - thanks pal. I love you and respect your opinion as well. hoser. Swine - My third thanks. I went and listened. I've heard enough. sorry to hear about your balls. Call me when they learn "Moon River". Gee - You're a big jerk. Stop being mean. Me - Shut up. Shut up you. I really needed that. |
Nate you want the Enz you email me a mailing addy k. I assume Alt=alternative... the bands I named are all NZ bands and some of them are alternative. The lead singer of stellar* is Boh Runga the sister of Bic Runga however they have completely different styles. Anyhooo.... I still wanna play.... |
acknowledged to be a genius. He's magic or something -- it's like everybody who hears him loves him. He's got this fabulous throaty, growly, raspy voice that's unlike anyone else's. He writes songs in a wide variety of musical styles. And his lyrics! They're like poems with a bad complexion -- imagery like nothing else out there. If I can find a website that has a decent collection of his lyrics, I'll post the address. (Good, now I have something to keep me occupied!) |
when i'll have a cooperative computer Sem. -- could you check your email to make sure you received my message? (The computer froze right after I hit send) ** |
hello For 3 songs to pay attention to: 9th and Hennepin Potter's Field Heartattack and Vine, which has my favorite Tom Waits lyric of all time: "don't you know there ain't no devil, there's just God when he's drunk" He writes a lot of tales of decay... |
maybe they dint go no weres. |
depressed British folk musician who died of an anti-depressant overdose in the '60s. No smack in his system, that I knew of. A very gentle man, too. I like his song "Fruit Tree." I think that's what it's called anyway. |
God bless those boys. *sniff* (Moxy Fruvous?!! lol, I thought I was the only one to ever buy that album. 'King of Spain'..oh god...the memories are all coming back now...ouch. Although their rendition of 'green eggs and ham' was inspirational) |
Rhiannon, I wasn't being literal about the smack.............implying his sense of self-deprecation with his chronic depression ands suicide..... |

i'm interested in getting some new funk, but i don't have any new funk to give in return. however, i have recently stumbled across a guitar player named Keller Williams. plays a 10-string, with the bass string tuned way down. he's a one-man band, playing bass, rhythm, lead, and percussion, all on his guitar. he does some cool covers... everything from Pink Floyd to "Nikki" by Prince to "Baby You Drive My Car", and has many great originals. great song writer. i also have some assorted wacked out world music stuff. send me some email if you got something you want to offer in return. |
Once I was the king of Spain (now I eat humble pie) Oh, my unspeakable wife - Queen Lisa! (now I eat humble pie) I'm telling you I was the king of Spain (now I eat humble pie) And now I work at the Pizza Pizza (one, two, three, four) Royalty, lord it looked good on me Buried in silk in the royal boudoir, or going nuclear free Or playing crokinole with the Princess of Monaco Telling my jokes to the opec leaders, getting it all on video Once I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) A palatial palace - that was my home (now I eat humble pie) I'm telling you I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) And now I vacum the turf at Skydome (once he was the king of spain) I can't wait, I'm lowering intrest rates, my people say: "King, how are you such a genius?" "There's a roof overhead and food on our plates!" It's laissez-faire, I don't even give a care Let's make friday part of the weekend And give every new baby chocolate eclair Once I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) Hey Clinton! Hey Yeltson! Got problems? You phone me! (now I eat humble pie) I'm telling you I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) Now the Leafs call me up to drive the Zamboni (once he was the king of spain) Now some of you might be wondering how I came to be living in Canada, after being royalty in Spain. Should I tell them, guys? (tell us King!) You see late, one night, when the palace was asleep Out of my royal chambers and into the garden I creep And I wait, till the apointed time, when themoon is lighting the pitch At which point my peasent friend who looks just like me, Arrives and we make a switch! (gasp) Prince and pauper, junior and whopper World made up of silver and copper Under my own volition, I took a change of position So next time you drool in the pizza line Remember, slower pizza's more luscious The king of Spain never rushes!! Once I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) I was looking for off-handed ways to improve us (now I eat humble pie) I'm telling you I was the king of spain (now I eat humble pie) And now I'm jamming with Moxy Fruvous (once he was the king of spain) (lead vocals - Dave.

i spent 6 hours straight last night cooking up an 8 1/2 minute song from scratch. sat down and didn't get up save for bongloads and beer. end of missive. |
Any of you out there Oysterband fans? I got to see them earlier this month, when I was on vacation. I also got to see Richard Thompson at the Hundred Club, this basement club in London that's had both Mingus and The Sex Pistols in it's long history. Both shows were great. I won't bore you all with details, unless you beg.... |

i'll resubmit. |
everybodys too scared of my music. |
I'm listening to Cornelius, Morphine, Beck, Soul Coughing, Mu-Ziq, Fishbone, Tricky, Massive Attack, Underworld, Tom Waits, Add N to X, Talking Heads, Belle and Sebastian, Ween, The Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Aphex Twin, and some seriously wacked out 60's exotica compilation my girlfriend got in the mail. I hate boring mix tapes. Any takers? |
Iwould, but I'm sure other folks here have a better collection than me (Early years Vols.1 and 2, Rain Dogs, Mule Variations). |
bastards. hehe |
on the action, it would be fun to blow the dust off of a Sorabjite mix now and then. I guess we could all swap Spotify playlists now. With all the Tom Waits talk above, I got to see Peter Mulvey and a band he calls the Crumbling Beauties play back in October. They get together a couple of times a year for the express purpose of playing the Rain Dogs album all the way through in its entirety. They do a great job of it, too. Their arrangements can get a little out there; one of the members brings a turntable and crates full of spoken word and sound effects records that he works in at just the right times, and this year, they had a new member who was playing a lot of found percussion. |
