Hey Rhiannon, remember how I said i would track down that Klezmer album i was talking about but couldn't remember the name? My buddy justin came throuogh:

"There are two really interesting recordings on this topic:

    1. Muszikas, The Ghosts of Maramaros or just Maramaros, this is Hungarian Jewish Music reclaimed from sons and daughters of the original musicians and composers--usual guest the now famous Marta Sebastian

    2. The Arhoolie/Folklyric label has a Vintage Klezmer music recording based off the collection of some guy who collected records--most of the records had been burned by the Nazis and these are some of the few that remain---great stuff old 78's-nice and crackly

    hope this helped...JP"

How about that? The first one is the album I couldn't remember.

Wow, thanks! To paraphrase that scary Turkish guy, my mother and I kiss you!

I told my mom what you reported, and she squealed "ooooh, we have to get that!" so we did a search on Amazon.com and found the Muszikas collection for sale ($12.99, and it will be here in 2-3 days). Yay!

The music that Justin referred to in #2 we *may* have found -- I did a search for the Arhoolie label, and the only thing on their roster that looks like it fits the description is this:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000DBU0/qid=946943048/sr=1-194/104-8553597-8554004

Could that be the Vintage Klezmer he's talking about?

must be. That Muszikas album kicks ass, but it's also very sad, because it puts you in mind of everything that was lost in the Holocaust. It brings it home when you imagine these guys playing at weddings and celebrations, and then they die in a concentration camp...
