Saw him live at the Orpheum in Boston back in September. It was somewhat unnerving, like being a Satan worshipper for all these years and then Beelzebub himself suddenly turns up in person.

The faithful were gathered together for the first time in twelve years. It was a homecoming with the weirdest mix of strangers you could throw together. He played heavily from Mule Variations but hit a lot of the older stuff as well. He had a band backing him most of the time, but the best parts were when it was just him on piano, chatting with the crowd between songs.

One of my buddies snuck in a DAT recorder and put together a double CD bootleg of the concert. Not the greatest sound quality, but it's good to have.

Markus, make sure you get what you want from swine before you send the copy (that's gentle ribbling, folks.)

By semillama on Monday, January 10, 2000 - 07:38 pm:

uh, gentle ribbing, not gentle ribbling, which sounds like it would feel very nice if performed on you by a nice young lady. . .

there's one for the sorabji dictionary

By R.C. on Monday, January 10, 2000 - 10:38 pm:

Truly! So, go enter it -- but ya gotta come up w/a specific definition.

Tell ya what, Swine: After you get yr bootleg copy of the Waits shows & tweak it a little to improve the sound (since you've got a whole living room worth of equipment)/will you send me a copy of the upgrade?

By Haywood Jablowme on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 - 10:29 am:

Nobody's gettin nothin cause Markus ain't got nothin. This has been a public service announcement.

By semillama on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 - 07:10 pm:

never fear, R. C., I think my warped mind can come up with something in excrutiating detail.

By Markus on Wednesday, January 12, 2000 - 11:28 am:

Finally got the word; he's wanting $25, but it's a double CD and he puts some work into the insert as well. (He's been doing them by hand, actually, since it was just conceived as a tiny batch for those of us who were there; I'm going to Boston the beginning of next week and will probably whomp something up graphically for him.) Again, the sound quality's not great, mainly because he had some yahoo nearby hollering out the random idiocy. I'll get more details from him then. In the meantime, email me if you're still interested, so I can get a rough count.
