    anybody ever hear of him?

    droopy?

i just got a ton of his stuff from usenet. haven't yet determined if i like it more for the form or the content.

By droopy on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 - 04:05 am:

what did your opinion turn out to be. suddenly i've gotten interested in the texas outsiders like jandek and roky erickson.

it's what i'm doing wandering around the web at three am.

By V on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 - 08:45 pm:

    I had a 3 second look at Jandek,he is 6 years old,then grows a beard,thats awesome.

By V on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 - 09:03 pm:

    ...he gets old so fast...

By dave. on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 - 11:44 pm:

ummm, i guess it was the idea of a jandek that did it more for me. i mean, there are worse hells than several dozen recordings of a paranoid folk musician who makes thomas pynchon look like an attention whore. right?

i guess i could say that, taking it for what it is, in a zen-like way, it doesn't suck. i figured if anyone here could approach forming a proper appreciation of him, it would be droopy.

By droopy on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 01:32 am:

it's the concept of jandek that fascinates me - this reclusive guy who makes all the records on his own label the records only him.

nobody's under obligation appreciate jandek. either your in a jandek state of mind or your not.

i was just at the website for the documentary they made about him. it made my netscape crash.

now i'm in a jandek state of mind.

By dave. on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 01:57 am:

heh. he recently played a festival in scotland. i remember reading about that. even there, there was skepticism about whether or not it was truly him.

i greatly appreciate the concept of a jandek. i probably lean towards favoring a musician's personality more than product. it's why i can love a bad song by the fall or nomeansno, and there are plenty. maybe i just haven't been in that certain place in space/time with a jandek album where it resonated with me like they did or do.

for me, lately it's underground hip hop/electronica. i have a major crush on the anticon records label. can not get enough.

"i probably lean towards favoring a musician's personality more than product"

that is, if the artist and i "click" on whatever level, for whatever reason, i might enjoy a bad song by that artist more than i would enjoy a better song by some artist i haven't yet "clicked" with.

i guess that means my opinion as a music critic isn't worth shit.

By kazu on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 09:30 am:

maybe, but how often do you "click" with an artist
and why? plus when you talk about why something is
good, you rarely revert to crush mode. Oh except with
mum--and then you get all blushy 'n shit.

By dave. on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 10:20 am:

    i'm crushing your head. "click"

By V on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 06:51 pm:

,,,,well I still like old stuff by "Eno".

By jack on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 08:40 pm:

no, i like old stuff by "eno"

actually, isn't that the basic idea of the contemporary/whatever music critic? i'm out of the loop to some extent but isn't the whole idea the subjective personality bleat?

or is there some "new objective" fad i don't know about?

By droopy on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 09:44 pm:

    you got me.

this jandek (and roky, and bulwinkle) thing i'm on right now is part of a radical subjectivity kick i'm on. and only i'm on. because it's radically subjective.

By jack on Thursday, June 9, 2005 - 09:50 pm:

now you're talking. roky and bulwinkle...that's some cool underground shit.
    bleib alien

i was thinking about hip hop, in particular when i was in nyc. i was paying note to the vibe there. the vibe in the cabs, cars passing on the street, the freaks with radios tied to their bicycles. thinking about the whole east coast/west coast thing.

the distinction really made itself apparent to me there. im thinking of words to describe the distinctions but failing. east coast tends to be more beat orientated, raw, less produced than east coast.

anyhoo it made me think they're probably some really bad ass underground shit in nyc, but im too lazy to find it. im also hindered by the fact i have no 'puter at home to surf at 2am.

By droopy on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 01:52 pm:

    intriguing.

    do i dare?

it's one thing for his albums to exist in some other hidden dimension that only make an appearance at 2am on an insomniac wednesday night or a rainy sunday afternoon. but to see him live risks it all being turned into something like phoebe at central perk.

well, at least it will "keep austin weird."

By dave. on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 02:14 pm:

or it might just blow you away . . .

he certainly has a lot of material to cull from.

By droopy on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 02:43 pm:

    jandek live

i guess i can't let this opportunity pass.

huh. getting down to austin for that concert became such a logistical nightmare that i forgot about it.

well, at least he hasn't dropped dead.
