Mastodon - Leviathan

sorabji.com: What are you listening to?: Mastodon - Leviathan

Never has there been a more appropriately named band.

Mastodon crunches through your speakers like the hairy elephant of yore. Their latest album is doing just that in the office stereo. it's inspired by Moby Dick. In some parts, it actually comes across very delicately, perhaps like a mastodon carefully picking up the puny human hunter with its trunk, prior to whipping him furiously against the rocky earth again and again and again.

Some reviewers say this band is the second coming of Metallica and Rush combined. I don't hear that. This is no second coming. This is a new standard bearer for all that was and is great about the type of metal that Metallica was once the rightful champion of, before they dropped the banner with the "Black" album. I find it hard to compare them with Metallica, as the style of metal is more fluid than Metallica's classic choppy, sparse riffing. This band has more in common with Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Anthrax in my opinion. The Rush comparison just puzzles me, as Coheed and Cambria is the obvious second coming of Prog Rock.

Leviathan is a different album than remission. It's perhaps more mysterious, more oceanic than "Remission" - which seemed more like the roaring of a forest demon than the watery behomoth conjured up on this disc.

As far as what I regard as the core of metal, Mastodon are the new kings, regardless of what the radio says. It does baffle me that they do not get played on the rock stations here. I notice that the brutal vocal styles in metal tend to not be played as much, though. Perhaps they are just too heavy.

Music like this makes me long for the days when I had a college radio show. There, I could crush heads at will with music like this. Now I must be satisfied with the odd compilation disc that I send to Skooter so he may school his young bandmates in the lessons of the Beast.

So, if you like metal, then buy this album.

I saw these guys last night. Unbelievable. A thousand times better live. They owned the stage. I haven't seen that much live intensity in a while.

I headbanged. I haven't headbanged in years, but I couldn't stop myself. If they come near you, you must see them. they truly are the new kings of metal.
