I started taking Clarinet lessons last Spring. It's something I just wanted to do. I'm still lousy at it. Better but still bad.
I've can't tell you how many CDs I've bought just to hear different artists and their various styles of playing.
My favorite pieces right now are Motart's Clarinet Concerto and his Clarinet Quintet.
Surprizingly I also find the CD "Masters of the Clarinet, 1892-1920" to be quite interesting.

Check out the Brahms Clarinet Quintet.

i'm more of a sidney bechet, mezz mezzrow kind of
    guy.

it's good to know you bought a clarinet instead of a
    shotgun.

I don't need the shot gun. I already have other means at hand. And, I'm not planning on using them.

Dougie thanks for the hint on the Brahms. I try and get one soon.

I'm already planning on my "last" Clarinet purchase after I get more money out of SSA. And, the lawyer gets his cut. And, the pension gets their overpayment back, And, I pay more taxes on the overpayment plus the disability I should have had. Well - I might be able to afford a picture of a good Clarinet.

Dougie, I'm not that thrilled with the Brahms Quintet. At least with the recording I have the strings seem to overpower the Clarinet. I do like the sonotas though.

Maybe you can suggest a CD where this isn't the case.

I have an old version of the Melos Quartet playing it. Not sure if it's available anymore. I know the Emerson Quartet has an album of it -- haven't heard it, but you can't go wrong with them.

Somehow I ended up with two clarinets last year.... I barely play, only because of working with flute and sax. I gave the old, decrepit clarinet to a kid's music program back in January and yesterday hosted a brunch and one of the guests was talking about playing her father's clarinet until it was stolen from her, about 14 years ago. So I lent her the remaining clarinet and she began to play.

somehow, i have become a violin teacher. strange.

I have changed my mind regarding the Brahms. My ears were acting up at the time. So I wasn't hearing it properly. I hate when they do that. It mostly effects sounds of a certain wave length more than others.

Dougie - that's the recording I have. Not bad when I can hear it properly.

I need to find more good Clarinet recordings to listen to.

    Any suggestions?
