1. bach: the orchestral works this disc includes all of the brandenburg concertos. there's one of those - i think it's number six - that i always loved. like a contrapuntal orgasm. * erroll garner: body & soul i remember one night listening to the midnight to four a.m. jazz show and hearing live errol garner. i was half-asleep, but it woke me up. just solo piano that i had to take notice of. * antonio carlos jobim: stone flower a lot of people only know him as the the guy who wrote "the girl from ipanema". but really he was the father of brazilian bossa nova. someone once said this album was his "kind of blue" (as in miles davis". * art tatum: piano starts here the greatest jazz player ever to touch a piano. i've forced many a friend to listened to his incredible runs on, for example, "aunt hagar's blues". and he he was nearly blind. * nina simone: the tomato collection tomato being the name of the record label. a collection of some of her most iconic songs. a mixture of great music and balls so big you could bowl with them. * legendary sidney bechet ever since i read philip larkin's poem "to sidney bechet", i've been meaning to get a disc of his work. * john lee hooker: boogieman '48-'53 i love john lee. truly the root of funk. yes, a bit limited. but, someone once said about punk icons the ramones: "the only know one song, but they play it very well." i think the same can be said for john lee hooker. * b-52's (eponymous) you know, the one with "rock lobster". i'm old enough to remember when they appeared on saturday night live for the first time. * halleluhjah chicken run band the leader of this band, thomas mapfumo, was called "the lion of zimbabwe" in his home country. my sister's boss is from zimbabwe (but white) and i heard of them from him. how could you not love a band with the name "hallelujah chicken band"? * harry partch: harry partch's revelation in the courthouse park harry partch is up there with raymond scott as one of the greats of iconoclastic/unclassible american music. if nothing else, i have to own this album; especially since it's on the "last chance" pages. |
i just found out that billy joe shaver is scheduled to play at the mcdavid studio (a venue just up the street from where i live) in september. the last time he was scheduled to play there, i missed him. that was the year he'd shot a man in lorena, texas. if you're gonna hear outlaw country music, you wanna hear it from a man who shot a guy in lorena, texas. |
excellent list, dr oopy. i don't think of "stone flower" like "kind of blue" but i can see the comparison. it's good. jaq likes those nina simone and john lee hooker recordings a lot and you can't go wrong with sidney bechet or errol garner. |
