This is an EXCELLENT movie. One of the more original movies I've seen in sometime. One of the rare movies where I can smell an Oscar sweep of all of the acting awards, plus screenplay, movie, and direction.

Spacey and Benning, in particular deliver boffo performances.

By Swine on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 02:03 pm:

    "boffo"?

i thought they kept the boffo movies behind that little curtain in the video shop.

By Rhiannon on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 02:16 pm:

Kevin Spacey is my favorite actor. He's so good he makes you see stars. He has this incredible ability to be so unbelievably subtle...little facial expressions that speak volumes but will miss if you blink.

My mother saw this movie...said it was "interesting" and "makes you think" but wasn't something she particularly enjoyed. She also said she didn't know if I would like it or not, and she knows I love Kevin Spacey, so this doesn't strike me as being a good sign.

Care to elaborate a little more, Jim?

By Waffles on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 02:25 pm:

he is a member at my video store.......gay porn anyone........this video store...i used to work there, so we ahd the skinny on all the customers and their usual rents. Kevin Spacey has rented gay porn, despite his denials, Flea is also a customer, but he rents nothing of interest. Pee Wee Herman, whatever his real name is, if ytou checked his rental history, you would see a few porn titles on that as well.

By Waffles on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 02:29 pm:

oh and and crispin glover as well, he's a freak, cool, but a freak

By J on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 02:45 pm:

No,shit Kevin, gay porn???Crispin Gay?Wait till I tell Amee, she even had her picture taken with him, something about a book he wrote.I saw him on Letterman once and he was tweaking.

By Waffles on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 03:02 pm:

unsure about crispin, but spacey, HELL YEAH, gay as a three dollar bill

By Rhiannon on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 03:15 pm:

He can sleep with animals, for all I care, so long as his acting remains as high-quality as it's always been.

Isn't Crispin Glover in a band?

By JusMiceElf on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 03:50 pm:

Crispin rocked in River's Edge. That was one of Keanu's best roles too. My favorite line from that movie is when Keanu says to his mom's boyfriend: "All you ever do around here is fuck my mother and eat our food. Motherfucker! Food Eater!"

By Semillama on Monday, September 27, 1999 - 06:25 pm:

I want to see the movie that Glover took on tour across the country. it starred people with Down's syndrome and talking hermit crabs. I think one of the crab's was voiced by . . .Ione Skye? Maybe? It was in Spin last year, someone else must know I'm not making this up.

I would expect Flea probably rented a lot of muppet movies and disney flicks cuz he's a parent.

By Gee on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 - 04:18 am:

Are you guys talking about George McFly?

When I was a little kid, there was a waiter in a 50's diner that looked just like him, and my mother dared me to walk up to him and exclaim: "You're George McFly!" and I did and my momma bought me a Barbie doll. I guess having that doll was my density.

By Jim aka PajamaBoy on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 - 08:37 am:

Rhiannon- I disagree with your mother's assessment. I can see certain people coming away and not liking it because of it's graphic everything, from sex, masturbation, language, murder. The acting is phenominal.

And Kevin Spacey has a cute butt.

Waffles, maybe he was just doing research for a "film" role, by renting those vids.

By Waffles on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 - 11:47 am:

    RIGHT!

By J on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 - 10:04 am:

I saw it last night!!!Wow!!! Kevin does have a cute butt, but I liked his character so much, that I was very disturbed at the ending, kind of shocked.

By Jim aka PajamaBoy on Thursday, October 7, 1999 - 02:07 pm:

How could you be shocked at the ending considering the opening narration?

By J on Thursday, October 7, 1999 - 02:34 pm:

I was shocked at who did it.

By J on Thursday, October 7, 1999 - 02:50 pm:

And I agree with you on the Oscars too,Jimbo.

By Rarebit on Friday, October 8, 1999 - 04:58 pm:

No shit. It deserves any awards it can get, but it might be a little too edgy (mainly with the dabbling in pedophilia) to win anything. Nominations, prolly, but the actual oscars will likely go to something a bit "safer"

The whole thing was done really tastefully though, so ya never know.

By Sarah on Wednesday, November 10, 1999 - 09:07 pm:

i just saw this movie on my lunch hour(s) today.

    holy fuck a moley.

hard to believe this is a hollywood film and not an independent film. it's pure philosophy. no tricks. one of the best movies i've ever seen.

i hope my mother saw this one. benning's role really reminded me of her in many ways.

i don't know, man. it all comes down to fear and numbness. gotta keep yourself in check and make sure you're still feeling something every day and that you're not afraid of your own life. heavy shit.... a good reminder.

By Antigone on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 12:04 am:

Yep, an all around excellent movie. Believe it or not, but the messages of this movie and the movie "Phenomenon" describe a large chunk of my personal philosophy / state of mind...

By hydrozoa on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 11:48 pm:

"american beauty" just goes to show where living your live for yourself will get you. can't please everybody. you'd think it was real life.

so, tell me, since i have so much to say: do you have to enter your name for each message or is there a login-type feature? how do you mark messages that you've already read?

By _____ on Friday, November 12, 1999 - 01:16 am:

    yes

    no

    mentally

By hydrozoa on Friday, November 12, 1999 - 01:50 am:

    thanks, man.

By Gee on Friday, November 12, 1999 - 10:51 pm:

That's no man, that's my wife.

By hydrozoa on Saturday, November 13, 1999 - 07:28 pm:

    she's a MAN, baby.

By semillama on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 - 11:07 pm:

    Finally managed to rent this.

    . . .

    What else can I say?

Besides I had no idea it was that damn good?

    This movie was nigh-FLAWLESS.

Now I can't go to bed.

I have decided to try and cut a lot of BS out my life, whether it originates with me or with someone else.

By JusMiceElf on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 - 11:41 pm:

I'm just waiting for Thora Birch in Ghost World now.

By mistaswine on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 - 01:20 am:

i thought the repressed homosexual/super-masculine homophobe cliché was kind of a flaw.

the ending could've been far less obvious if that character was an ultra-conservative priest struggling with personal demons rather than the highly agressive stereotypical military-type. i kind of knew the general was gonna end up being the killer as soon as he noticed his son talking to spacey in the driveway. g.i.joe was all set up to have some kind of moral imperative to kill anything that exposed his sexuality. if he were some kind of religious figure, the pool of possible perpetrators would've been a little more even. but maybe that's just me.

anyway. even if the rest of the movie was all ass (which it definitely wasn't), it'd all be worth it just to see the characterization of that smart, sincere, pot-dealing kid who was so overwhelmed by all the beauty in the world.

By semillama on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 - 08:45 am:

Yeah, he was definitely the most interesting character in that movie, and you never really hear about how good a job he did.

By Isolde on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 - 09:37 pm:

    I loved it. So much.

By Gee on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 - 11:49 pm:

I want to see the movie with the chickens.

By Rhiannon on Thursday, June 8, 2000 - 12:15 am:

    So do I!

At my library, we got a book in on how the chicken movie was made. There was so much attention paid to every little detail of the clay figures...every feather on the chickens, every texture of the humans' clothing. Really neat stuff. And you know that any movie by the Wallace and Gromit guys has to be adorable.

By semillama on Thursday, June 8, 2000 - 08:55 am:

A Wallace and Gromit movie is in the works, you know.

    Anyone seen Creature Comforts?

By M on Thursday, June 8, 2000 - 09:26 am:

Wallace and Gromit are the best. It's that damn penguin that I don't like.

By Cat on Thursday, June 8, 2000 - 10:10 pm:

Read an article the other day by an 'Independent' Film Producer.

He was saying that the term "independent film" had been hijacked and homogenised into a Hollywood marketing term.

In other words, Hollywood uses "independent" to convince shallow cinema goers to think they are getting a "unique" film experience they can discuss in dark coffee shops with pseudo intellectual friends.

Watch for the rash of blockbuster independent movies in a cinema near you.

By Rhiannon on Monday, April 2, 2001 - 11:49 am:

I finally saw this last night. Dag. It had me in tears. Did it win any awards?

    Next stop: "Happiness"

By Rhiannon on Monday, April 2, 2001 - 12:06 pm:

Shoot, where's the thread where everybody talked about "Happiness"? It's not under the best or last movies. Help!

By patrick on Monday, April 2, 2001 - 01:05 pm:

American beauty won numerous awards.....Kevin Spacey got best actor lasst year for it.

By Rhiannon on Monday, April 2, 2001 - 01:53 pm:

    Oh. Good.
