One spoilery thing I want to discuss is Jackson's decision to eliminate any mention of Faramir and Eowyn getting together. (Yes, I fully understand that the movie was long enough already. I'm just saying...)

I thought, for those unfamiliar with the story, it must have been rather jarring to see Faramir tossed off the pyre so casually and Eowyn have her heart broken, and then to see the two of them standing together and smiling radiantly at the end. I'm sure their scenes together will be included on the DVD, but a sentence or two explaining what happened would have been nice.

I did think it was a nice move to keep in the scene in which Eowyn hands Aragorn a cup and he feels her hands tremble. Tolkein, for as little romance as his story contains, had a nicely delicate touch when he wrote their scenes. It was too bad the line Aragorn speaks in the book when he rejects her wasn't included. (I wish I could remember it verbatim...I forgot to look it up last night.)

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:03 am:

I just remembered: During the Shelob's Lair scene, I think it would have been better if the camera had lingered just a little bit on Gollum's falling body or the pit right after Frodo tossed him over the edge. For all the unnecessary camera lingers that filled the movie, here was a moment when one was needed and wasn't there. Gollum is such a major character that I felt that the "is Gollum dead??" trick didn't have any weight to it since he fell so casually.

Then again, when he fell into the lava at the end, I thought he lasted too long. He should have been burned or consumed instantaneously, if you ask me.

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:05 am:

One more thing! Why wasn't Denethor's palantir mentioned??

By semillama on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:37 am:

That was my major beef with the movie. The missing scenes I could deal with because I know they will be in the extended version (including the "healing hands of the king" scene).

But overall, it was amazingly good. It was the most intense of the three, and the longest of the theatrical releases but it still felt rushed. There needed to be scenes of the army riding through Ithilien before they got to the Black Gate. And I missed the Mouth of Sauron (I hope I don't have to wait until next november for the extended version, dammit!).

but that scene, when the Rohirrim crashed like a wave into the Orc army? Glorious.

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:50 am:

Yes, the Mouth of Sauron! I missed him, too. And I missed Gandalf's fight with the Witch King, but I can deal with that.

I loved the Witch King so much...every time he showed up on screen I couldn't help grinning. So scary!

I was thinking about the DVD releases too....I believe (not knowing for certain) that they've been releasing the EE in November to remind everyone about the new movies in December, but since there ain't no more new movies...

What did you think of the decision to have the Dead fight the orcs at Minas Tirith?

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:53 am:

I found that good line about Eowyn:

"Few other griefs amid the ill chances of this world have more bitterness and shame for a man's heart than to behold the love of a lady so fair and brave that cannot be returned."

By semillama on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 04:55 pm:

    That's quite a mouthful, though.

I thought it was a good decision to have the army of dead at Minas Tirith, it made sense since they didn't have that ingathering of all the warriors from different parts of Gondor. Although there should have been a part where all the good guys freak out when they see the black ships.

I did miss Ghan-buri-Ghan, though. THey should have had him in it. Peter Jackson should have played him, he would have made a perfect Ghan-buri-ghan.

Gandalf v. witch king will likely be in the extended version.

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 05:11 pm:

Hehe, I had typed something like, "Now I see why they cut it" but erased it.

I liked the dead at Minas Tirith, too, because it simplified a lot and it was cool to see the orcs wiped out so decisively. Only, it would have been nice to see some of the humans reacting with surprise or horror to them. And I thought they didn't look as scary as they could have.

Who was Ghan-buri-Ghan again? I should re-read the books.

For my birthday this summer, I got a really nice book of LOTR maps, written by a geographer/cartographer, that are just in fantastic detail. Let me see if I can find a link to it on Amazon.

By Spider on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 05:12 pm:

This is it. I heartily recommend it.

By spunky on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 05:15 pm:

I hope we don't have to wait until November for the extended versions.

I absolutely loved ROTK, and had no beefs.
We watched it with Mikayla, and she seemed to enjoy most of it.

I would have liked the Gandalf V Witch King fight too.

I still say Gandalf could kick Dumbledore's ass any day of the week.

By semillama on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 05:55 pm:

I have that one. Be warned that it was done well before the movies were a twinkling in Peter Jackson's eye, and so there is no connection between any of the buildings in the book and the movie (ie, Edoras in the book is a different interpretation of LOTR than the movie).

She does lots of atlas books of fantasy series. I had one as a young adult she did for Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider books.

Now there's a movie that needs to be made!!

By eri on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 06:14 pm:

I will admit (having not read the books in their entirety) that I was confused seeing Eowyn standing with Faramir at the end. Now I understand. It just didn't make sense to me.

But I really enjoyed the movie, and wouldn't mind seeing it again. I could tell just from the movie that they had cut the fight between Gandalf and the Witch King out.

I cried a lot during that movie. I found it to be visually stunning. I sat there watching it and thinking through the minds of the characters and cried off and on through the entire movie, until the end when they were all crying, and then I was totally dry eyed.

And towards the end, when they all come into Frodo's room to visit him......fuck me eyes everywehere. No denying it. They were ALL giving Frodo bedroom eyes. Every last one. Hehehe.

By Rowlfe on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 06:48 pm:

this is from someone who never read the books. i still dont care to.

but anyways. I hated the theatrical release of FOTR, bored me to tears. I didnt get into it until I had someone who knew the books explain what everything was and who they were and their backstory as i watched it again. When I saw the extended version then i liked it, but only LIKED.

Saw Two Towers and loved it... moving on to ROTK, still not knowing what is missing that was in the book....

More climactic then I actually expected. I didnt think the battles in this one were gonna top Helms Deep but they did... specifically because of the Oliphants and the trolls and that pigfaced Orc... the way they did the rocks hitting the city was just intense, and i remember a few 'titanic' type moments of showing people falling from great heights...

Aragorn and Sam were my faves, and I think of all the cast, its Astin that deserves the oscar nominations the most this time... McKellen was still great but Astin really made the movie as Sam.
I still am not too big on Elijah Woods Frodo. I wasnt really into Frodo so much, and it was only when Frodo was being taken over by the ring that I found him interesting. If it werent for Sam and Gollum being so good I dont think I'd care too much for that part of the story... like at the end when Frodo is reflecting and is too much changed and needs to leave the Shire? I didnt really feel it. I dont think Frodo's character had much depth in the film. Maybe in the book he does and you can thus feel it in the film knowing more about him, but not having read the books, I'm saying I didnt feel it from him.

Faramir and his story with his dad was maybe the biggest surprise for me. man that Dethewhosit guy who runs Gondor is one of the all time movie assholes.

I knew in advance that Christopher Lee's death scene was cut, and i must say the way they took care of it it didnt really matte rthat he wasnt in it. the explanation given was fine, even though i'd like to see the scene.

There were a few borderline tearjerking moments, those being while Pippin sang, and at the end where everyone bows to the hobbits. To me, that is THE signature scene of the movie, more than anything else.

a few moments where they treaded the line between being cool and being unintentionally funny:

Legolas taking down the Oliphant was pretty over the top, and that last swing down the trunk into the action shot was cool, but still pushing it. its the kind of thing i'd expect from a lesser action film... its something you could see happening in Batman and Robin (albeit not during an intense battle on an elephant, you know, like on Ice vs. mr. freeze or something)...

the other scene being the Wave of the Ghost Warrior guys that just plowed through everyone. DOnt get me wrong, that was fucking incredible, but I remember this one shot where someone else was fighting in the foreground and far in teh background the Ghost Warriors are kicking ass, knocking everything over, in a swarm like locusts. the way that shot was done and how nonchalantly the ghost guys can just sweep everyone else off their feet, it was pretty funny....

By Lapis on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 03:52 am:

Nothing really substantial to add to everything you guys have said, but the movie is pretty damn incredible.

I react pretty strongly to movies sometimes (not so much in theaters, self-concious, but at home) and this one would've had be jumping around had I not had strangers at either elbow. I just drew my hood over my head and tried not to jerk in my seat too much.

    (1) The scene in the tent: I was so scared it was Wormtongue when the king announced he was taking his leave.

    (2) I shall always remember Legolas and the Oliphant as Legolas and the AT-AT.

    (3) "Still counts as one." 'Nuff said.

    (4) When the witch king said "No man can slay me." It did my feminist heart very proud when Eowyn announced herself as female before killing him.

    (5) It was nice to see Bilbo one last time.

On a side note, I made the mistake of purchasing a large root beer before perching on a theater seat and drank it all. I didn't dare to leave my seat for fear of missing a vital scene so when it was over I rushed to the restroom and had one of the best pisses of my life. The neighboring stall emptied twice while I was still going strong.

The problem with making these movies based off books we all know and love is that it is virtually impossible to make a good film of an appropriate length without angering someone for skipping a scene from the book. It's good that there are extended versions available to sum everything up but it really must be a miniseries.

Did Legolas go over the seas too?

I wanted everyone to be worried about Sam so much. Here was Frodo, so pretty and sad and ready to give up every two seconds acting like a brat and Samwise fucking starts carrying him up the mountain and defends him from danger and rescues "Mr. Frodo"s ass! He should've just taken the ring and gone right up that mountain and let pretty little Elijah deal with the orcs. "Oh, but he's suffering so." Pah!

Maybe they were giving him bedroom eyes because they raped him up the ass when he was asleep. Poor little pretty Frodo. My precious.

By Lapis on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 03:54 am:

Oh, and what happened to the gobin/orc armies when Sauron fell? Don't you dare tell me they fell into the pit.

By Spider on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 09:58 am:

"Did Legolas go over the seas too?"

Yep. That's actually a pretty strong theme with his character in the books, how he's pining for the sea.

All you folks who cried....I didn't cry at anything. What went wrong? I don't think I cried once during the entire trilogy, except I was mightily disturbed when Gollum argued with himself in TTT and wailed "I hate you!" Poor little creature. The film guys did a really good job of making him a pitiable figure.

That amazing site Dave showed us when FOTR came out, the Encyclopedia of Arda, has become a pay site, if you can believe it. GRRR.

By dave. on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 05:48 am:

By Spider on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 09:35 am:

I must be dumb. How do you actually get into the site? And search what you want to search for, not just look at the most recent entries?

By dave. on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 11:57 am:

i don't know what you mean. i spent hours there reading about characters and places and whatnot.

there's no search feature but everything's so well cross-referenced that it doesn't really matter. to me. it's just like i remembered it.

By Spider on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 12:27 pm:

Um. I didn't see the scroll bar on the left frame. Pretend you didn't read this.

By dave. on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 12:30 pm:

    read what?

By Spider on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 12:40 pm:

    Exactly.

    Have you seen Secretary yet?

By heather on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 01:42 pm:

    mmm

    secretary

By dave. on Monday, December 22, 2003 - 02:12 pm:

yeah, i did see it. i should say up front that i think dominance, submission, bondage, etc. is silly at best. when driven by mental illness, it's pathetic and sad. i find it nearly impossible to be sympathetic to maggie's character when she lets the guy get away with that crap, even though i know that's the point of the movie. spader's character just irritated the hell out of me. the scene where she won't get out of the chair because he told her not to, and all the media attention and stuff was totally implausible. i thought the scene where she had her wrists chained to the stick was totally well choreographed.

i still have a raging crush on maggie g. i'm going to see cecil b demented next.

By TBone on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 - 01:21 am:

Finally saw ROTK. For some reason, the two most emotional points for me were when everyone kneeled to the hobbits and when sam mentioned rosy on the side of mount doom.

By kazu on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 - 10:18 am:

"when everyone kneeled to the hobbits"

yes, this is when I nearly lost it. even thinking about it the next day, my throat got a bi ole' lump.

By Spider on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 - 10:36 am:

Dave, if you didn't like it, you didn't like it, but I have to point out that you really did miss the point of the movie. For one thing, she didn't let him get away with anything -- she wanted to do it as much as he did. They were both broken people, and they each found healing through each other. That was sort of the axis of the movie, that it could have been just a stupid S/M story but it actually was an insightful and thoughtful love story.

By dave. on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 - 12:04 pm:

i got the point. like i said, i'm not very sympathetic to that fetish. if it gives her what she needs and keeps her from cutting herself, that's progress. i dunno, i just think it's unfortunate that people need to sometimes develop these elaborate sets of conditions in order to get their jollies. unfortunate isn't the word i'm looking for. i don't have patience for stuff like that. hey, it's just a movie and i don't think you're stupid for liking it. it could have been worse.

speaking of movies, my next 3 netflix movies should be arriving today. i got the butthole surfers video. if it's the one i remember, there's a scene where the whole band is in bed, tripping on acid and eating pizza and gibby's doing this hilarious stream of consciousness monologue. i saw it years ago and only barely remember that scene.

By dave. on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 03:27 am:

cecil b demented is a shitfucker of a movie.

bhs was considerably less hilarious than i remember.

i want those 3 hours back.

By Rowlfe on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 08:59 am:

I didnt like Cecil, I thought it tried too hard

By Spider on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 10:49 am:

"cecil b demented is a shitfucker of a movie."

    Is that good or bad?

By dave. on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 12:07 pm:

    very bad.

    go back to sleep.

By kazu on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 07:12 pm:

    hee hee

"bhs was considerably less hilarious than i remember"

I hate it when that happens.

I agree that Cecil tried to hard, but I don't remember hating it.

By Gee on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 06:35 pm:

did I ever tell you guys that I went to Trilogy Tuesday? I probably did. that was a great day.

during one of my geekier moments, I was watching some fan-made music videos that I found on-line, and there was this one that someone made about Faramir and Eowyn's romance, from scenes in TTT and ROTK. it was pretty awsome.
