starred Bill Nighy (whom I love) and Kelly MacDonald (whom I enjoyed in "Gosford Park"), I had to watch it. So I did. And I was disappointed. "Lost in Translation" covered similar ground, and its characters were more sympathetic. I loved Nighy's character, Lawrence, who was shy and funny and very sweet, but MacDonald's character, Gina, was too much of a cipher. You finally find out what her damage is in the last scene, but by then, it's too late -- and the fact that she didn't laugh at Lawrence's humor really...well, it said nothing good about her. It made me averse to caring about her. He was so cute, and she barely smiled when he made a joke. And I can't believe this beat "Bleak House" for the Emmy for best writing in a TV movie -- "Bleak House" was brilliant, from top to bottom. |

Loved "Little Miss Sunshine," btw. I loved how everyone was so dysfunctional as an individual, but with their powers combined as a family, they were great. |
