I have always loved post nuclear war movies. |

hi Spunky. i'm not trying to be a contrarian, but i absolutely hated The Road the book. i really tried to get through it but only made it about 1/3 of the way. and i too am a fan of post apocalyptic stories. now that i have kids i can't watch movies like The Road, or Snatched, or anything that has to do with hardship related to children. i even had my eyes closed through most of the first half of Slumdog Millionaire. i'm a wimp like that. |
The last movie we watched was The Men Who Stare At Goats. It was entertaining. Next up is Ponyo, which we want to watch with our son (although he probably won't be interested in it). |
sem, i got ridiculously up-close photos of the female heron - i'll post one or two to our flickr site. i looked it up and i'm a little disappointed because i think it's a green heron family, not blue. but the males still look blue to me. |

I'm going through another MST3k phase. Lots of them are available on Netflix streaming. I watch them on my Roku box. There's also a ShoutCast TV channel that plays non-stop MST3k episodes. I'm supplementing with Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax shorts. It's great that both Joel and Mike are still doing their thing. |
one) cop/lawyer/doctor shows? It's the same show for 20 years. I'm amazed the networks keep peddling that shit and people still watch? |
I tried to watch the first Twilight movie, rifftrax version (outstanding), also disastrously drunk, and it still took me two attempts to get thought it because THAT IS HOW BAD IT IS. Got to the magical vampire baseball scene and i said "Fuck this. NO." uhm...anyway rifftrax is the best <3 |

There are some happy and little sad part in that movie.. Insommia is driving me up late again like a week ago. Something got to give. |
But whatever happens to Louise Fletcher? Anyone? |
I thought it was a twist on the tales of chivalry. The Driver is literally a knight in shining white armor who rescues a fair maiden and slays his enemies. He even wears his family crest on his back. The song that we hear played twice has a chorus that talks about being "a real hero and a real human being." Except in this modern reality, you can't be both. Being a hero/white knight means getting your hands dirty, murdering people, scaring the shit out of the fair maiden you rescued (who isn't a maiden but a mother), and not being able to assimilate into the society you protect. I thought the stylistic throwbacks to '80s action movies, down to the use of the font Mistral in the title sequence, were a nice touch. Carey Mulligan usually strikes me as overrated, but I thought she was perfect for the role of the maiden in the story. Without her, the character could have easily been a flat nobody, but she's so luminous and sensitive, you can totally believe that anyone, even (or maybe especially) an asocial weirdo like the Driver, could fall instantly in love with her. Falling for Ryan Gosling and his slow smiles needs no justification. |
