i saw this flick and i couldn't help feeling that zeta-jones and gere thought that they could just "step in" to this genre and "nail it". they didn't. catherine was sort-of ok but richard gere came off as a fucking phony. i think rene zellwiger outshined them both.

ok, movie musicals are "old fashioned" and "out of date", but that doesn't mean that any successful contemporary actor can be good at it. for me, the thing about the old musicals is that the actors were believable, even though the premise was fantasy. richard gere was the wrong choice for that part.

    was there nudity?

By eri on Monday, January 27, 2003 - 12:26 pm:

I am not fans of either Gere of Zeta-Jones, so I didn't go see it. I love the old musicals, but the actors then were trained differently then those today. I expected to be dissappointed so I didn't bother.

musicals usually inspire violence towards the performers in me.

By Joe on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 01:37 am:

eri, you are right. musicals should feel honest despite the fantasy. "chicago" was tounge-in-cheek all the way.

By Joe on Thursday, January 30, 2003 - 01:38 am:

    unfortunately, there was no nudity.

By Richard Gere on Thursday, May 1, 2003 - 04:08 pm:

No, you're wrong Joe. There was nudity.

Unfortunately, the clothing got in the way of the flesh.

I am a fan of musicals, for the most part... I also happen to really like the greats of the silent film era. I have a hard time finding them to rent or purchase, but never-the-less when i can i do...

speaking of musicals, i also really enjoyed South Park the movie... music, originality, copious cursing, bill gates being summarily executed!, and the cursing... really made me laugh.
