In no great order, except that Number one really IS Number One as far as favorites go.

    1. A Christmas Carol (with Alastair Sim)
    2. Man in the Iron Mask (with Malkovich. my great shame.)
    3. Gone With the Wind (oh shuddup)
    4. Sleepless in Seattle (oh shuddup)
    5. It's a Wonderful Life ("I wanna live again!")
    6. Raise the Red Lantern (viciousness!)
    7. When Night is Falling (snifflesobcry)
    8. Shall We Dance (with Fred and Ginger)
    9. Hard Core Logo (I've never wanted to be a knife so bad in my life)
    10. M (shudder)

Well, I'm Scottish so you American Yankees may not have heard of some of these, but I would have to advise you to seek them out and watch then, good humor!

1 Has to be "Titanic" nothing like watching a ship sink for three and a half hours

2 "Shallow Grave" This is a British Film, it was released a few years bach but it's still mighty good. Nothing like a good blood to get you going.

3 "Shooting Fish" yet another British one, very well made, however I've been told that American people dont get most of the jokes.

4 "Waynes World" Nothing like a bit of dirty teen humor.

5 "Night of the living dead" OH the green men are after us, rrruuuunnnnn"

Well I cant think of any more. Erm if amyone knows of any good movies I should cheak out, mail me, and I'll see what I can do!

By Gee on Friday, April 9, 1999 - 04:45 am:

Yes, I can see how being scottish would have Everything to do with a couple of british flicks and some american ones.

"Shallow Grave" was decent, but that girl (forget her name) rocked the freaking world in "Angel at my Table". hot Dog!

By MoonUnit on Friday, April 9, 1999 - 11:42 pm:

Ahh that would be a movie from my side of the world Gee *g*

    Seen Once Were Warriors??

By Agatha on Saturday, April 10, 1999 - 02:22 am:

i loved "angel at my table." i can't remember the actress, but it was a jane campion movie. i'm not much help.

By Gee on Saturday, April 10, 1999 - 05:00 am:

"Once Were Warriors"..I've never seen that. What's it about? Is it an NZ flick?

By the way, Agatha -- the actress' name was Kerry Fox.

By Squeezable on Saturday, April 10, 1999 - 10:40 am:

"Angel at my table"??!!!!!!!! What kinna name is that. This is the scottish girl who wrote top 5 earlier by the way. I've never heard of that movie! If it is really good, I shall have to see if I can rent it sometime. What is it about? Oh another good movie is Lock Stock and two smoking barrolws. I saw it last night, it is really good. Well I would like to know if anyone has seen shallow grave, lets discuss that movie!

By Margret on Saturday, April 10, 1999 - 04:54 pm:

I saw Shallow Grave for the first time like 4 1/2 years ago. I knew then Ewan McGregor could have anything he wanted off of me, and I don't favor blondes.

By MoonUnit on Saturday, April 10, 1999 - 08:39 pm:

    *mmmmm Ewan*

Gee it is and its about a woman and her children and her abusive hubby. Gotta say I cried thru to whole movie... they have just finished the second part.

mmm the guy who plays Ng mmmmm

By Gee on Sunday, April 11, 1999 - 01:56 am:

Hey thanks. I'll look for it on my next video run.

As for "Shallow Grave"...eh. An average quality flick that looked better in the trailors. The only thing I liked was that one guy getting sick all over the place when he hacked up the bodies. uh..he did that, right? It's been a while...

By R.C. on Sunday, April 11, 1999 - 04:52 am:

"Once Were Warriors" is abt a dsyfunctional aboriginal family in Australia. The father abuses the shit out of his wife. It was so raw I nearly vomited during the beatdown scenes. Not becuz of the blood/but becuz it was so true-to -life. Like peeking thru someone's window. It was the most powerful film abt family violence that I've ever scene. To this day/I don't know how they managed to shoot those scenes w/out killing that woman...

Definintely rent it, Gee. But not when you're in a bad mood.

By Cyst on Sunday, April 11, 1999 - 09:37 am:

    margret -

if you want to see ewan mcgregor run around naked for two hours, then rent "the pillow book," another (otherwise) boring peter greenaway movie.

By Semillama on Sunday, April 11, 1999 - 12:08 pm:

Here's another excellent film - Smoke Signals. Anyone seen that? I thought it seemed like a pretty accurate depiction of modern Indian life, at least compared to how it is around here. The Couer D'Alenes didn't seem to have a casino like everyone else tho.

By MoonUnit on Monday, April 12, 1999 - 01:45 am:

Uh RC its about a Maori family in New Zealand, Auckland to be precise and the book is way more intense than the movie (isn't that always the truth tho - I remember when I was young and seeing SE Hintons The Outsiders on video... crap crap crap compared to the book

Oh yeah the second half is called What becomes of the Broken Hearted, and its about the Dad in the film (Temuara Morrision). I still have to read the book.

By R.C. on Tuesday, April 13, 1999 - 12:57 am:

I reallly liked "Smoke Signals". It was cool to see what Indians think of themselves. But that guy w/the glasses did get on my nerves...

And thanks for the correct MU. I had no idea it was based on a novel. I shall have to look for that one.

By MoonUnit on Tuesday, April 13, 1999 - 03:57 am:

RC, It's by Alan Duff, he also wrote a couple of others that I haven't read but would like to

By Nelly on Sunday, April 18, 1999 - 02:02 pm:

This thread is causing my subconscious to dredge something up.

Has anyone ever seen a movie called Cleo from 5 to 7, directed by Agnes Varda?

I don't know if it will still be on my top 10, but I'm sure I saw it dozens of times. It used to appear regularly on "The Big Movie" etc. (late night and Sunday afternoons in Atlanta), when I was a young child. It's in French with English subtitles. I can barely remember it now, just have this impression of it being wonderful in this happy/sad, European way. I'm going to get ahold of a video copy (if necessary, I could buy it from Amazon) and see it again.

By Agatha on Sunday, April 18, 1999 - 02:20 pm:

    harold and maude
    reuben and ed
    the red balloon
    all over you
    usual suspects.

i saw "out of time" (i think it was called that) with george clooney and jennifer lopez, i was amazed by how good it was. i thought it was going to be a totally cheesy action thriller judging from the trailers. the movie "next stop-wonderland" hit the spot for me recently. sem has good taste in movies, i loved "delicatessan", "shawshank redemption", "dead man walking", and "clerks". i laughed my ass off at clerks, at the time i was working at kinko's full time and an espresso cart three days a week.

By Sarah on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 12:44 am:

    Mo' Better Blues

    The Fisher King
    Bladerunnerf
    Slam!

    Honorable Mention:
    The Full Monty
    Pulp Fiction

By Sheila on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 01:55 am:

cleo from 5 to 7 was about the same time as jules et jim, and knife in the water, the nouvelle vague.

i agree about harold and maude.

    performance.

in the realm of the senses.

By R.C. on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 03:54 am:

Aggie -- that was "Out of Sight". With Clooney & Lopez. Both of whom were yummy.

By SQUEEZABLE on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 05:07 am:

    EAT HOT FUCK

By Margret on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 10:30 am:

Baxter (Mefiez vous le chien qui pense!)
    Delicatessen
    High Plains Drifter
    The Ref
    The Wall
    Time Bandits
    Mary Poppins

I was just introduced to a film called "Can Dialectics Break Bricks," in a class- Architecture of the Senses. We didn't get to finish, but the beginning was, well, ...well worth watching (and very funny.) We were discussing the situationists. Anyone with a view on this stuff?
