sorabji.com: The Stalking Post: why did we all get so boring? let's liven it up a little!
THIS IS A READ-ONLY ARCHIVE FROM THE SORABJI.COM MESSAGE BOARDS (1995-2016).

By Mavis on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 06:59 pm:

last night while i was dropping off some recyclables at the transfer station, i made my usual rounds by the magazine barrels and i found
the whole last year of playboy, so of course, being such a naughty mavis, i swiped them so i can cause mischief later.......

then later, me and wendy were scrutinizing them, trying to figure out what is so insidious about them...all we could narrow it down to was
    a) the top-heaviness and obvious implants some of those gals have
    b) that those women apparently only grow hair on their heads, nowhere else, save the tiny mohawk pussy strip
c)and the weird, almost-cool fashion, torn out at the breasts withan exacto knife.......

we didn't get it. we decided that lesbian porn is much sassier.........hairy gothy ladies and boots.all the playboy boots were so cheesy! yipes!

    anyway...

By semillama on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 07:06 pm:

    But what about the articles?

Chyna is in next month's Playboy.

By Mavis on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 07:11 pm:

um, i wasn't very interested in the articles....i did notice all the ads were for propecia, skoal, and football......

By patrick on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 07:32 pm:

    playboy is so unsexy

By patrick on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 07:32 pm:

    Juggs, now THATS sexy

By moonit on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 08:17 pm:

Chyna scares me. Shes so manly.
If I was a boy I'd be too scared to touch her
because I bet she could crush me with her
    pinky finger.

By Cat on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 08:18 pm:

I don't get turned on by Playboy. But I haven't seen one in years.

I found one in my mother's beside cupboard when I was eight. It was an edition that featured footage of Marilyn Munroe's purported porn flick. Maybe Mummy was a Munroe fan.

Thanks for this thread Mavis. Talking about porn is always a fun way to spend the day.

By Isolde on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 10:02 pm:

It is. The articles in Playboy used to be better.

By Isolde on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 10:03 pm:

Oh. By the way, speaking of porn, I witness Jello Wrestling yesterday!

By Inquiring minds want to know on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 11:46 pm:

    what flavor?

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 11:12 am:

i'm glad to hear that others think playboy is unsexy......makes me feel better.

i used to have the stereotypical feminist chip on my shoulder about porn and about 2 years ago i had the opportunity to reexamine what i truly think of it, how i feel about it....i basically came up with these ideas .
    a. if it's something you're not ashamed to own, if you'd leave it on yr coffee table, for example, it's okay.
    b. what makes it shameless is seeking out material that reflects your values, not just some fucking trash. but if some fucking trash reflects your values, then that's great.
    c. if my lover uses porn, i want to share that with them. this is how it all started for me, i discovered some really bad old 80's stuff in my partner's possession. i sort of freaked out and thought stuff like "oh no! he doesnt find me attractive because i don't shave anything and i have curvy wide hips and short hair and i don't look anything like that".....after a lot of thinking and not wanting to be the typical bitchy girlfriend, i sort of confronted him and told him that i wanted him to throw it all away immediately......and then i wanted to take him shopping for material that turns us both on, and stuff that reflected his taste as a generally respectful man......

oh my god! that was apparently the best thing i could have done. it caused him to reexamine his own desires, and we were able to talk more freely about what we expected/wanted from sex.......

not that that isn't water under the bridge now.....

By cyst on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 11:52 am:

"terror twilight" is my favorite pavement album today, though tomorrow it could be "wowee zowee" again. I don't particularly like "brighten the corners," and I need to re-examine "slanted and enchanted." "crooked rain" has always been solid, dependable, good.

I would rather stay here and listen to this ("terror twilight") than go to work. I don't think most playboy models are attractive. they remind me of poodles.

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 12:13 pm:

how many pavement albums are there?

By patrick on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 12:59 pm:

    lots

Slanted and Enchanted is my fav....

"Summer Babe" my most fav tune

Crooked Rain is fun and singable, but Slanted and Enchanted is by far my fav

i never understod the whole feminist/porn deal...

as long as there was no manipulation with the women who do it......who the hell cares....and im' not sure why people expected porn to reflect some sort of moral code. It's porn, it's fantasy.

I thought it funny, i recently rented Deep Throat, as I had never seen it before, you know the classics. the mrs. snickered at thesight of it and continued doing her crossword. minute by minute her attention deviated from the crossword to the tv, next thing you know someone is getting lucky.

although i heard after the fact, the main actress, Linda Lovelace, was beaten and slapped around...during, before or after the making of it....apparently you can see bruises all over her...i didn't notice....but yeah it's nice to hear that women can have their interests piqued by porn from time to time......otherwise men will continue to hide it in the closet, keep you out of that realm of his life, never talk to you about itand inherently alienate you out of shame.....and fear of rejection.....men have enough sexual hang ups as it is, taking the burden of porn guilt off our backs is a good thing.....good job mavis...smart "egg"

you know speaking of eggs, when ever Gee makes the statement "he/she is a good egg" its likw all of a sudden i hear applause, and reception music....almost like at an awards ceremony...Gee's Good Egg awards...

I would like to thank Mark Thomas *sniff sniff* for the freedom and platform to express.....

By cyst on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 01:42 pm:

I never thought pavement could outdo their first albums, slanted and crooked rain. like, how could they get any better? I didn't give wowee zowee much of a chance, partly because of dumb name, but that one is great. they've gotten more complex (which doesn't necessarily mean better but it can and in this case does) over the years, and I'm thinking their last, terror twilight, may actually be their best. they are the best rock band of our time, for sure, so that may make terror twilight the best rock album of our time.

patrick -- have you listened much to wowee zowee and terror twilight? I think they surpass their early efforts. and this is a subject I take too seriously, the importance of pavement.

I cried on my birthday and had to put all my gifts in a drawer. so I didn't discover terror twilight until this summer. and now this fall my mind is fully ripe for it.

By patrick on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 02:11 pm:

no i haven't, i too shyed away from that one due to a dumb name.....maybe i will reconsider

as far as rock importance...i would have to say the Pixies and Sonic Youth , to me are the most influential and important rock bands of the late 80s and 90s....what do you think?

did you ever listen to Watery? that came out before Slanted and it kicks majopr booty as well, but i think my dub taped version has gone kapute!

I would also go with Westing also prior to Slanted...this was the first album i ever heard from them......again their early shit is just too good, i was actually disapointed by Crooked Rain......and was therefore pooped on everythign after it.....but i'll take your word for it....

i don't know if these are still available.....but they are less refined, collegy, stoner....much more quirky....

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 04:16 pm:

    who is Chyna?

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 04:18 pm:

    also, anyone like Tahiti 80?

    they're FRENCH!

By droopy on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:06 pm:

there's a song called "wowie zowie" on frank zappa and the mothers of invention's "freak out."

    help,
    i'm a rock.

By patrick on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:07 pm:

god another band with a number behind it...fer christ sake do something original.

i have no idea who Chyna is

By moonity on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:27 pm:

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:32 pm:

    Dear Droopy,

Freak Out is my favorite zappa album.

    love,
    Suzy Creamcheese

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:33 pm:

    hey droopy-
where you going with that shirt...

i'm going to the love-in, gonna sit and play my bongos in the dirt.....

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:33 pm:

also, Playboy is silly. i mean, shit, is that really the best they can do? if so, then they should take the pictures out, the mediocrity is downright insulting.

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:33 pm:

hahaha but whooooboy do those folks have a lot of men by the balls.

    suckers.

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:34 pm:

    yes!
    silly!

sarah, are you really an upper peninsula expatriate?

By patrick on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:38 pm:

    Chyna is a man

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:47 pm:

a man? posing nekkid in Playboy?

all right. all righty then, that's something interesting.

Mavis, yes. i was born in Marquette and lived the first four years of my life up there. my parents were undergrads at northern when i was conceived.

my grandparents had a summer cottage in Mackinac that we visited frequently.

    mmmmm Mackinac fudge.

every summer i would rent a bike on Mackinaw island and ride the circumference. ate dinner in silly frilly girly dresses at The Grand Hotel.

    uh oh. brb.

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:56 pm:

wait. Chyna is a girlboy? Or just a boy?

By sarah on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 05:57 pm:

    YUM PASTIES! DROWNED IN KETCHUP!

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:01 pm:

    oh ya, hey.....
and not just them, but the pannakakku!

By semillama on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:12 pm:

Chyna threatens many peoples images of what a women should look and act like.

It's just not very lady like to go around in studded leather bras, chaps and little else, I suppose, then have the audacity to be a wrestler, and even be cheeky enough to clothseline and suplex 275-lb men all over the place.

I think Chyna is an advance scout for the Sex Goddesses in their Pleasure Ships.

AS far as porn goes, the humor/cheese/Slack value of the older porn is pretty awesome....

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:20 pm:

it depends......a lot of that cheesy early eighties shit is very violent---like lots of army ads and whatnot

    grody.

By droopy on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:21 pm:

    i own one porn tape:

the 70's porn classic "the opening of misty beethoven."

    *

"is misty beethoven your real name?"

"nah, i just took it to sound more sophisticated."

    "so what's your real name?"

    "dolores beethoven."

    *

i knew you were a zappa fan, sarah.

it was only logical that mavis was.

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:22 pm:

    how was that logical?

By droop on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:27 pm:

just an expression. you seemed to be the type to have broad musical tastes. from what i've read.

By Mavis on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:34 pm:

    plus, i'm freaky!

By patrick on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:39 pm:

i dunno about no playboy spread for Chyna, i just took one look at her and thought she may have been a man (looking for adams apple)

i have an old porn tape, called Historica Erotica....its a collection of stag films...

By Nate on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:41 pm:

    ok. playboy.
two readerships ... the ones who buy it for the pics, the ones who buy it for the articles (and the pics).

the former pays for the tits but their money buys the quality of the articles.

    tit subsidy.

By Antigone on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 06:51 pm:

Adams apple probably comes from anabolic steroids. Or, as George W would say, antigobolic steroids.

By Isolde on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 07:02 pm:

By Dougie on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 08:42 pm:

Haven't heard of Tahiti 80, Sarah. What kind of stuff do they do? Ever heard Autour de Lucie? In a way, kind of a French Garbage.

By dave on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 09:37 pm:

slanted and enchanted sucks only because of the production values. it needs way more bass. gives me a headache. i like the fall sounding stuff on crooked rain. i also like the sonic youth sounding stuff. wowee zowee is a really good album. i never could get into the groove of brighten the corners and i lost interest after that. maybe i'll get some stuff off napster and try it again.

    production values.

fuck indie cred. i want it to sound good. godWEENsatan: the oneness would have been so totally much more kickass with better production. killer ideas, brilliant execution, sucky production. i know, that's why it's so charming: they got baked and recorded it in a shed. but look at what they're doing now. can you imagine how amazing that album would sound if they had better equipment?

porn. i had a woman friend tell me she'd much rather look at hustler and it's ilk rather than playboy simply because you can see their pores. there's no airbrushing or at least not to the degree of playboy and penthouse. i agree.

that's my story and i'm sticky to it.

By dave. on Friday, September 15, 2000 - 11:44 pm:

    correction:

where i said 'slanted and enchanted', i meant 'westing: by musket and sextant' and where i said 'crooked rain', i meant 'slanted' and where i said 'wowee zowee', i meant 'crooked rain'. i like crooked rain the best. as if any of you peckers cared.

Playgirl is suggested "reading" for my Film and Literature class.

By J on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 04:11 am:

I use to buy them for Brucifer,he begged me,I always was embarrassed, but not as embarrassed as I am when I get my copy of Bizarre in the mail,it is sealed in a big envelope that says confidential,I just know my mailman thinks I'm a perve.

By Isolde on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 11:19 am:

    *laugh*

By Nate on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 02:38 pm:

    playgirl is written by morons.

By semillama on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 06:00 pm:

    So is Sorabji.com.

By semillama on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 06:01 pm:

    *snare hit*

By cyst on Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 06:08 pm:

I agree about s&e. a friend made me a tape in january 1994 -- slanted and enchanted on a and crooked rain on b. I had to turn the volume way, way up to hear the first. so I ended up not liking it nearly as much as I could have. crooked rain was of course not only good to listen to but brilliant as well.

I got wowee zowee when it came out and didn't fully appreciate it at the time, though I later learned to love it.

but then I set pavement aside for years and years. then this spring a friend put "the hexx," a black sabbath-inspired song from "terror twilight" toward the end of a mix tape.

I called him up, "THIS is what pavement has been up to? how could I not have known?"

I had a friend buy me the album for my birthday in april, but, as I said, I was so sad I couldn't put it on until june or so. I put it in the car stereo during my move to seattle, and I couldn't believe how perfect it was. I don't know if it's better than wowee zowee. I don't know if it's better than crooked rain. but it's perfect.

a few weeks ago I decided it was time to complete my collection and learn about "brighten the corners." after listening to it for a while I realized I'd heard it before. but none of the songs is especially memorable. even now, I can't think of a single tune on it. it's not offensive, but there's no appeal.

so, you guys, dave, patrick. you need to hear "terror twilight." I am preaching. contemporary rock gets no better, I think. if you download tracks from napster (how does that work, whole albums or just songs?), look for 1 spit on a stranger, 4 cream of gold, 5 major leagues, 10 the hexx. they're all good, but those would convince anyone.

By patrick on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 11:59 am:

alrighty, i'll give it a go.......i don't download music, but if i see it used i'll pick it up....

    thank you.

to the gay men and curious women.

    play girl sucks.

our magazines http://www.menmagazine.com....made by gay men for gay men....

By patrick on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 12:00 pm:

By dave. on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 01:38 pm:

i listened to wowee zowee this weekend. i have the double album that's really a 1½ album because side 4 is ungrooved. is that the right terminology? anyway, my turntable was doing a variable speed thing so i had to take it apart and clean and re-lube it. now, it works great. i pretty much like the album except for "serpentine . . . something".

napster typically displays individual tracks but you usually have no problem getting the whole album. unless it's fu manchu's "daredevil". i s'pose i'll check out terror twilight.

By sarah on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 03:59 pm:

tomorrow matt and i are going to see Stop Making Sense at the Art Academy Theater. they're running all kinds of rock n roll documentaries this month, including Isle of Wight, which i've already seen, the Stones movie Gimme Shelter, one about the Sex Pistols that i can't remember.

anyway, david byrne is god, have all his solo stuff and tons of rare talking heads stuff. i've seen this movie a dozen times but it's worth seeing again.

with all the free porn on the net, it's a wonder why all the magazines don't fold. guess some people really are reading the articles!

also: being boring is ok, being bored sucks.

By dave. on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 04:27 pm:

i always figured i was bored because i'm boring.

By sarah on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 04:42 pm:

    but you're not boring.

By cyst on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 08:03 pm:

I talked to david byrne once in prague. we passed each other in a narrow staircase. it was so romantic. (he said, "excuse me," and I said, "no problem.") his hair was long and beautiful, and I wrote a poem about him. he played talking heads songs to the czech kids and everyone loved him.

the sex pistols documentary is probably "the filth and the fury," which is entertaining for about half its million-minute running time. johnny rotten cries about sid vicious!

gimme shelter's supposed to be good.

By J on Monday, September 18, 2000 - 11:47 pm:

The song "Watermark",same as it ever was,Oh God!! "How did I get here"?

By JusMiceElf on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - 03:03 am:

I've got a copy of Crooked Rain around somewhere. I don't think I've listened to it at least since I've lived in this house (bought the house in the fall of 96), but now I'm going to give it another listen and look for the more recent stuff.

Heard a great reissue tonight, a band called Foreign Objects, a local punk band from the late 70s, lots of songs about wrestling, including "I hate Strongbow," about Chief Jay Strongbow, and one about Captain Lou Albano, but the best songs on the disc were "Retired Deviant," and "English Only." They actually hand delivered the CD to my friend after he ordered it, since the label is here in Northampton

By semillama on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - 09:02 am:

Oh shit! Is that song called "No One Can Dispute The Genius Of Captain Lou ALbano"??!!

I've been looking for that, but I had teh band name wrong!

    Whoohoo!

By JusMiceElf on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 - 09:52 am:

You got it, Sem! We listened to the whole CD three times through last night while painting. Everyone needs a copy of this.
