THIS IS A READ-ONLY ARCHIVE FROM THE SORABJI.COM MESSAGE BOARDS (1995-2016).

By patrick on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 05:54 pm:

so i went and scored some records during lunch...dig it...

    Joe Tex-Happy Soul
Seam- a fucking great old indie band from Chicago, lost my cassette of theirs 8,9 years ago
    REM-Reckoning (i'll take it for a $2)
NY Dolls-Actress:Birth of the NY Dolls (i know little about this particular album but i listened to it, sounds good and crappy like every other NY Dolls recording. Appears a collectable and in sharp shape
The Nation of Ulysses - The Embassy Tapes (punk doesnt get much better and sassier than this)
Lemonheads-C'mon Feel the Lemonheads (oldie but goodie for a $2)
Eric Dolphy-The Greatness Of (i busted numerous nuts in the jazz section but i had to stop here, don't have any Dolphy, and this guys swings
The Clash-Give em Enough Rope (again, another solid oldie but staple

    and the big score....

Sonic Youth -Sister (original pressing...'how do you know that?' you ask? well..i'll tell you. I actually have this at home, an original overseas pressing (the linear notes are in portaguese) that i got back in highschool. a friend bought it in Rio in the mid 80s. I traded some coedine pills for it in 10th grade. I know its original because on the back there is a picture of a girl in overalls. if you go to the store now, you'll see a black rectangle over the picture because they never got the rights to it and the girls family sued. The problem is, in college, i broke the actual record...so ive had the jacket with no record ever since. Well...low and behold lookie lookie what aron's has...an original pressing, without the black box. they know it too, because they charged me $10. Which seems a bit low...but considering how bad ass this album is fucking worth it.

    buy any music lately chumps?

By Nate on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 06:53 pm:

i'm going to buy the new beck on the 24th.

By Gee on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 07:16 pm:

I bought Sarah Slean's "Night Bugs" a few weeks ago. I adore it. I want more.

By dave. on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 07:27 pm:

    nate -- save your money.

By Nate on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 07:33 pm:

    is it ass?

By semillama on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 08:30 pm:

I've been feeling the pull of the used shop for a while. I tried staving it off with my purchase of a Dream Theater cd and a Fu-Schnickens cd from 1/2 Price books on clearance- 50 cents each. I wanted to know what Dream Theater sounds like, as John Petrucci is supposed to be a killer guitarist. He is very skilled, but it doesn't bleed, you know? Give me some Zappa anyday for hot guitar. The FU-Schnickens album was pretty good. Can't complain for two quarters.

Still, I think that the ol' used cd store is a-calling. I'm going to wait a couple weeks though, to see if the new Les Claypool album shows up in the bins - I hear it kicks ass.

By dave. on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 10:27 pm:

eh, personally i probably wouldn't listen to it more than a few times. i like beck but it's a little too folksy -- even for beck. but if you like folksy stuff and don't really like the vegas beck, maybe you should get it.

By moonit on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 10:41 pm:

I got the new goodshirt album.

By Maxigeil on Saturday, September 21, 2002 - 01:03 am:

Chris Whitely's Long Way Around: An Anthology

By sarah on Saturday, September 21, 2002 - 09:04 am:

i think the new beck is just fine. it's not as alien brilliant as some of his others, but i would buy it.

mm, then again. his alien brilliance can sometimes sneak up on you from behind when you're not paying attention.

By dave. on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 12:50 pm:

    nate:

beck - sea change. i could only fit the first 7. let me know if you want the last 5.

By Nate on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 01:52 pm:

right on. yea, i'd like the last 5.

By dave. on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 06:54 pm:

ok, i'm uploading it right now. same link. give it about 10 minutes from. . . now.

By dave. on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 07:07 pm:

crap. site's down or something. i'll let you know when it all there.

By dave. on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 09:25 pm:

    08 - 12 ready to go.

By Nate on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 09:59 pm:

    got'em. thanks.

By JusMiceElf on Sunday, September 22, 2002 - 11:54 pm:

I want the new Mekons disc. I saw them
Wednesday, and they kicked some serious
    booty.

By Spider on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 10:00 am:

I know I've asked this a few times before, but I always forget the answer:

I have no Mekons albums -- which one should I buy first?

Patrick, does the Seam album you got have "The Prizefighter" on it?

By patrick on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 11:47 am:

no spider. that appears to be on a later album.

hey dave, how come songs 1-7 send me to some weird web advert where as 8-12 download fine.

    thanks bitch.

By JusMiceElf on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 12:18 pm:

    Spider, get them all.

Really, it depends on what you like. My first was Curse of the Mekons, which has somewhat of a country vibe (check out the cover of Wild and Blue).

Another standout is So Good It Hurts, with a number of great tracks: Fletcher Christian, Robin Hood, Dora, etc.

Also, their recent Journey to the End of night is moody and dark and another fave.

Oh, and don't overlook the collections: Where Were You, and I Have Been To Heaven and Back. The latter has a great version of the old street rhyme Oranges and Lemons, as well as a blistering version of Orpheus. Any band who can capture the full gruesomeness of Greek myth in song is alright in my book.

Other Mekon-loving Sorabjites might have widely diverging opinions. One of the great things about the Mekons is their range.

By dave. on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 01:23 pm:

i could only fit half the album on the webserver. you want me to put the first ½ up there again? jonesing for folk ballads?

By patrick on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 01:27 pm:

i've been hearing his new tunes on the radio...i dig em.

just adding them to my giant PC jukebox.

so...if its no trouble...sure....i'll grab the first ones.

By dave. on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 08:41 pm:

    here ya go.

By patrick on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 11:24 am:

if no one is afraid of folk, Beck is going to be live on kcrw.org at 11am PST.

    you're so cute dave.

By dave. on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 11:41 am:

    i know!

By Pancake Boy on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 12:19 pm:

I finally broke down and bought the White Album on cd since my LP sounds so shitty. Came with a brand new Gideon's Bible. My rival it seems had broken my dreams, by trying to steal the last CD. His name was Magoo and he called himself Pooh, but everyone knew him as JerkOff.

By patrick on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 12:34 pm:

wanna send me your LP? I almost bought it last week. Someone had dumped a huge Beatles collection at the record store. Its a particular one that ive been meaning to pick up for ages now.

By Pancake Boy on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 12:42 pm:

Sorry dude, I've kept all my old LPs for old time's sake, even if I've replaced them with CDs. When I go next to a used record place, I'll look and if I find one, will get it for you. I would doubt that any of those used ones have that poster that came with it though.

By patrick on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 01:00 pm:

no no, no need. I can walk a block and pick it up....for $8, thanks though.

I think i saw a listing one time of the various pressings & editions of the White Album...there are tons. For some reason its one of those psuedo-rare sought after albums which baffles me as to why its so sought after. It seems readily available.

By The Watcher on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 - 12:42 pm:

If you're looking for hard to find items pick up a copy of "Goldmine" and a magnifing glass.

They have a lot of adds with a wide variety of music. If you don't find what you're looking for then you can check out one of the record shows listed for your area.

By Nate on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 - 09:55 pm:

    do they have subs, too?

By patrick on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 07:51 pm:

    fuck you, you ass

By dave. on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 07:54 pm:

    loser.

By Nate on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 09:04 pm:

i'm not the one hanging out around sorabji.com on a friday night.

By spunky on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 09:06 pm:

    heh

By semillama on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 09:55 pm:

By Nate on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 11:16 pm:

AND THERE AIN'T NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, SEM. REALLY.

By semillama on Friday, September 27, 2002 - 11:53 pm:

By Platypus on Saturday, September 28, 2002 - 02:59 am:

    6 years. Unbelievable.

By kazoo on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 12:13 pm:

    woo-hoo patrick! congratulations.

By J on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 02:06 pm:

It looks so pretty what is it called? And how is nico doing with the soon to be baby?

By patrick on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 02:25 pm:

Catalina Island. Its 26 miles off the coast of LA.

It was founded centuries ago, but is owned now (and has been since 1919) by the Wrigley family (as in the gum, Chicago, baseball field etc etc).

It has a small resort town on it called Avalon.

    circa 1930s

There is a casino (big bldg to the right) with an amazing ballroom that was built there in the late 20s.

There are no cars on the island (except local officals and the few tour guides). You get around by renting a golf cart or walking. There are wild sheep and other animals that live on the island. It has peeks at about 2000 feet. The snorkling and scub diving are supposed to be tops there because the water is amazingly clear (free from LA's dumping).

it just so happens there is a Jazz festival this weekend too, but unfortunately it appears to mainly comprised of contemporary bullshit psuedo jazz.

By patrick on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 02:26 pm:

and nico is getting along well j, thanks for asking. she has exhaustion and cramps from time to time. This week and last, shes been having bitchin day-long headaches. But for the most part shes a-ok.

By J on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 02:44 pm:

Day long headaches don't sound o.k. to me. Catalina island sounds really nice.I've never been there but Heather went with her class for a weeknd when she was in high school.

By patrick on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 02:51 pm:

i've read that pregnant women can experience increased headaches. Since she's doing everything she can to avoid medications, she's not diving for the asprin, tylenol or advil right away, so they stick around. she's also managing a lot of stress so....i think shes fine. we see the doc again next week.

By eri on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 05:46 pm:

I had that too. I hate taking pills and would just suffer through the headaches all day. Seriously, the tylenol won't hurt her or the baby and is perfectly safe for her to take. I used to date one of the lifeguards out there at Catalina Island. That place is great. Congratulations.

We have a new night club opening like basically in our backyard tonite. It is 7 clubs in one. My friend came down a couple of nights ago and told me that we are going. I told her that I refuse to go to the country western club and she agreed. We are going to the alternative bar and then to the karaoke bar to laugh our asses off. Hopefully tonight will end up fun. $1.50 beers, so I am sure it will be.

By patrick on Friday, October 4, 2002 - 07:49 pm:
