so, is there an issue with fiction written in first person present tense?

it seems so rare? do you hate reading first person present? is it harder to write?

    what's the deal?

By semilllama on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 07:19 pm:

It does seem harder to read, somehow. It may be harder to write because when you are telling a story, usually you are telling it from the perspective of it being in the past.

By heather on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 07:57 pm:

you can switch- that's often done

    aw, faulkner

i would think it would be harder to impart other
information [the past, other people's pov...]

By Nate on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 08:35 pm:

    i've never read faulkner.

i think, personally, it is easier for me to write autobiographical (and pseudo/quasi autobiographical) in first person present tense. i tend to stand myself up back in whatever situation i am writing about and then write as the action progresses.

i am so used to it, in fact, that when i do write in other tenses i do switch. often mid paragraph. which is an issue.

i don't know when i've ever given a fuck about other peoples' pov, but yeah, the past is difficult.

    goddamnit.

writing is hard. it is so much easier to get drunk and go barf a journal entry or pervert rant somewhere.

By Lapis on Friday, September 26, 2003 - 08:57 pm:

i would suggest that you write what comes naturally and then correct it later. if you can't write initially following all the rules, don't.

    First person present rocks it.
