The other was Cher's final concert. Talk about a juxtaposition. It was odd, watching on one hand a Western culture in the process of destroying, and on the other, Western culture being destroyed. From the french program, I watched as the camera man ran for cover with the Iraqis. A voice over (with english subtitles) narrated what was happening. THe camera paused for a moment on a man writhing in pain on the ground, clutching his belly. The narration announced that "this man is already dead. He has a belly full of shrapnel." From there, the camera crew moved with the Iraqi group, terror in their eyes as they attempted to evacuate the wounded. They placed some wounded into a police car, which immediately came under fire as it streaked out from cover in reverse, attempting to get out of the hot zone. I'm not sure they made it. According to the narration, the Iraqis were unable to even get off a shot, and spent the whole time trying to disengage. Then I switched over to Cher. Bizaare costumes, cheesy music, alien looking Cher. I thought to myself - "there's a war on. bombs are dropping in a city. And this is on the TV." How much weirder is it going to get? |
