then someone started the fire. it was the basement that flared up first. everyone began climbing up the ladder-like stairs (somewhat akin to those you'd find on a boat or a ship), but i spread glue on my stomach and inched, cattipillar-like, up the walls. i was the last one out. i sealed the hatch, then turned to see what was going on. the little kids had been taken away to have juice and cookies, and the older girls were swinging in two rows. there was one swing left, in the middle, and i couldn't go around. i had to wait for the swings to go by. i made it to my swing and sat down. i looked up, only to see a man tangled in the chains. we talked about religion for a while, then i got up from the swing and sat on the ground. he untangled himself and jumped on me. |
