    it is more comfy than she was. it sleeps better, too. and after the years it no longer smells like her. it smells like the box it has been packed in since 1994, and i feel like i haven't touched it since 1993, when i first started packing boxes and burning bridges and getting ready to move on to whatever came next.

    i still have not opened any of the CDs we bought together. or looked at any of the videotapes of us. or developed any of the film. and long ago the e-mail correspondences were sent off to floppy disks and labeled only "MAIL, 1994."

    i have her socks, too. which are too small for me. but they show up in the laundry every few months. and her calling card number. and the keys to the apartment she lived in back then.

    sometimes i wish keys were magic, and that the key to this apartment could be used on any lock.

    go up to my p.o. box, use the magic apartment key, and i am here, not at the post office.
