ok. so i have this 'disk doctor' thing installed on my computer. it is constantly telling me that 'disk failure is imminent'.

that is scary and i'm sick of it

and i'm sick of having to end programs and reboot and everything takes forever

i could reformat i guess. but i'm lazy and this thing is a bit old anyway. so i want a notebook. i've wanted one for a while. maybe i just think it would be cooler- i dunno. i'm tired of dragging this big thing around and not being able to write at home or some other place with the sun shining in.

    so help me.

    please.

and i don't just want to get the best one i can find because i know i don't need it and i'm going to need to get some clothes pretty soon.

i want to run autocad and photoshop and crap like that without any problems.

    um. thanks.

unless you don't answer me and then i will be upset and kick your ass. all of you.

If you can afford it, go with Dell Latitudes or the new IBM Thinkpad X series. Get a Pentium III (up to 600 Mhz.) Stay away from the Celeron. If you want to do autocad & photoshop, you'll need some serious RAM -- at least 128 MB, if not 256. Choose Win2000 as an operating system. Dell has great support. IBM has ok support. My quick 2 cents.

By heather on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 11:42 am:

someone here said that i need to be careful about the video card, something about the RAM but he sort of wasn't sure what he was talking about and didn't have any more information.

By Dougie on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 12:09 pm:

Look for at least 8MB of SGRAM -- some models will try to skimp in laptops with only 4.

By patrick on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 12:11 pm:

yeah..stay away from Compaq....i've been tempted to toss the wife's compaq out the window more than once. We spent hours just getting rid of all the factory shit they put on 'puters these days. Dell seems good as far as service goes.

By Dougie on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 12:22 pm:

Poor poor Compaq. What the hell were they thinking buying DEC? They're still one of the big boys, but they could've been the biggest. Their management ran them into the ground. My old shop was all Compaq servers, then we went to Dell when their service became shoddy. Glad I got rid of my stock when I did.

dougie did you hear the dialog on stern this morning between Gary the Retard and Beetlejuice?

By Dougie on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 12:40 pm:

No, dammit. He was announcing it was coming up, but I got to work around 7:45 and it hadn't come on yet. He had just started talking to Greg Gumbel when I pulled in. Why, was it good?

By patrick on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 12:55 pm:

fucking surreal.....howard was basically pitting the two of those guys together....beetlejuice was talking shit and so on....

    i'm not sure

i have a tendency to buy the very best thing of what i'm looking for [that i can reasonably afford] figuring that i'll be happier with it especially in the long run.

in this case i guess i can afford about everything i've seen [just less money later] but i don't want to be stupid and say, pay money for speed that won't make any difference to me.

when i look at what i wanted to pay, adding things that make it better seems expensive but worth it....bigger screen size, dvd, more memory....and i find myself unable to decide.

i would appreciate any advice on things NOT to get as well.

    thanks!

    don't get herpes.

By heather on Friday, January 26, 2001 - 01:45 pm:

    uh. ok.

i think i'm hesitant because deep down i feel like i can't really afford it, but at the same time i think i need it before this thing croaks

I have an old compaq 1825 with a huge screen and enhanced everything that was actually a whizbang demo at Comp USA and I asked, "got any scratched and dented ones like this?" and they sold it to me half price right off the shelf.

It works fine for me, esp with the huge monitor it is more like a desktop. Much more memory and power and speed that the dell pc dearly loved and well used...but there was a ton of factory shit, and the language character set when I got this had been set to Bosnian, so once I got that figured out. But my explorer keeps screwing things up and now Dave tells me the AOL icon is screening my calls and making lewd gestures.

My penny: go shopworn and negotiate negotiate negotiate. Then shop sorabji.com What the hell do I know? When I bought a printer, I got the Lexmark factory rep down with coupons and rebates so as to cost me $9 for the printer.

The leather carrying case was $200.

    what not to get:

nipplemouse. get a touchpad or rollerball. nipplemice are of the devil.

Does it have to be PC? the Mac Powerbooks are really nice.

NVidia or ATI graphics card. I don't know much about how laptops are put together. No one will let me take theirs apart, and I can't afford my own. Yet.

By Antigone on Saturday, January 27, 2001 - 12:11 am:

    Apple's
    Titanium
    powerbook looks like an excellent
    machine. It's suprisingly cheap, too.

And, if your purpose is to run photoshop, you
    can't get much faster than a G4...

By Cat on Saturday, January 27, 2001 - 08:15 am:

My hard drive took a not very graceful swan dive into obscurity today. It was quite sad really. There were little pathetic coughs. Seriously. Five or six choked gasps. I tried everything, but alas it was too late. It was gone to the great silicon pit in the sky. Psszzzzzzzzt.

I'm using my laptop. Texas Instruments Extensa 570 CDT. It's quite old but I wouldn't recommend it anyway, it can barely carry the dull work crap, let alone run my favourite porn sites in all their glory.

By Cat on Saturday, January 27, 2001 - 08:17 am:

Incidentally, I find it hard to think on a smaller keyboard. Does that make sense, is this a common condition, or is it just me?

By Daniel ssss on Saturday, January 27, 2001 - 12:25 pm:

ditto on the touchpad. Makes me think better. Tactile. Not like substituting erasers for goat's cheese. I am perfectly happy with the size of my laptop, Cat.

    You made my day smileyface.
