The DATU allows a field tech to dial in and assess the physical and electrical characteristics of a line from anywhere on the loop. You dial into the DATU with your butt-end (what the phreaks call a biege box,) enter a password and are presented with a voice-prompt diagnostic menu. There are a variety of tools available, such as being able to monitor the audio on the line you are testing, help test line integrity by shorting ring to tip, or lay tones on a line to help find the correct ring & tip in the phone can. It is useful for phone techs trying to troubleshoot line issues. To a phreak it isn't really anything but novel.

Some GTD-5 switches have a similar feature called a Proctor Test Set.
