If you could set your own sleep schedule, what would your hours be? Do you suffer from insomnia? If so, how often? What is your preferred sleep environment? (Silent? TV on? Temperature?) What position do you usually sleep in? Do you sleep in a bed? Futon on the floor? Chair? How hard or soft do you like your mattress, if you use one? How many pillows do you use? |
My sleep schedule is incredibly variable because I am a writer, so sometimes I go to bed at 7pm, and sometimes at 9am, and I wake up whenever I am ready to, or when one of my obnoxious neighbors starts mowing the lawn/chainsawing/doing engine repair, hurling trash cans around right outside my bedroom. I'm a big fan of my sleep schedule, because it basically involves going to bed when I am tired, and waking up when I am not. As a result, I rarely suffer from insomnia, and when I do, I don't really think of it as insomnia, I just think of it as a period where I am awake for a few days. I'm also a huge fan of the randomly falling asleep for half an hour at my desk thing. I'm all about a cold, silent, totally dark sleep environment, and I thrash around in my sleep (in a bed, preferably on the second story, with a medium-firm mattress) a lot. I'm not really a fan of sleeping with other people because they get all hot and sticky and I feel confined. I can't sleep without at least one covering; even when it's crazy hot, I have to have a sheet. Sometimes I put my pillow in the freezer for an hour before bed during hot weather, or I throw a few icepacks in the bed to cool it off. Or both. I have a complicated pillow system. I have two firm pillows, and two softer ones, and I create a sort of pillow fort. When it's really hot, I sleep flat, without a pillow. I also can't have my mouth/nose covered when I sleep. I have been known to sleep in bathtubs, although my current house doesn't have one. I like that they stay cool through the night, at least the good old-fashioned cast-iron ones. I recently stumbled across a photo someone took of me in high school, asleep in a bath tub, with my gothy black hair all sprawled out on the porcelain. I should scan it. |
This is my self-set schedule, so I assume it is preferred. I do have insomnia periodically. Usually when I have a reason why I need to be up in the morning, or when I haven't slept enough for a couple days and really feel like I need a good nights sleep. I have trouble sleeping past 8 or 9. Occasionally (rarely, recently) I never get tired, which is a point of anxiety for me. I prefer quiet, dark, with a cool breeze or a cool room. I like at least a sheet. I've never slept in a bathtub. I've slept next to a bathtub. After ten years on a $250 mattress, about six months ago I went and splurged on the best mattress I could find. I love my bed. It is probably more soft than firm. I sleep with one of two pillows. One is synthetic and one is down-filled. Some nights one is more appealing than the other. Maybe like some sort of pre-game superstition. When alone, I tend to sleep on my back if sleep comes easily, or on my side if I am having troubles falling asleep. |

there is usually a long interval between the time i "go to bed" and actually fall asleep. my earliest attempt at falling asleep is 2am, if i'm lucky. i get up anywhere between 7 and 10am. If you could set your own sleep schedule, what would your hours be? i've always wished i could be one of those people who go to bed at 10pm and fall asleep instantly and then wake up refreshed the next day at 6am. but i never will. Do you suffer from insomnia? If so, how often? i've never slept well, but i don't know exactly what you consider to be insomnia What is your preferred sleep environment? (Silent? TV on? Temperature?) i usually like sound: radio (bbc down to a murmur, midnight jazz), air conditioner, fan, the trains i always seem to live near, etc. What position do you usually sleep in? fetal position. i was conditioned to sleep in that position in the first years after my spinal cord injury. it prevents decubitus. i was made to set an alarm clock for 2 hours after i went to bed. when it went off, i would change my position (facing my right or left). i have always been a bad sleeper - even as a child i would stay up all night listening to my parents' german clock chiming me to the morning - but the waking up every 2 hours thing didn't help. Do you sleep in a bed? Futon on the floor? Chair? How hard or soft do you like your mattress, if you use one? How many pillows do you use? in a bed that's easy to transfer onto from a wheelchair. i have slept on the same mattress for the past 20 years; it is as hard or as soft as it is. i put an "egg crate" over it. as i sleep, i rest my head on one pillow and put another one between my knees to prevent pressure sores. but the answer to the question "how do i sleep" is alcohol |

My wife's usually up in bed by 9:30 or 10:00, I go up at 11:00 or 11:30. When I remember early enough in the evening, I'll take 1 Tylenol PM. Winter sleeping sucks -- we have baseboard heating, and when it kicks in, the gurgling and expanding of the pipes usually wakes me up. Also makes it pretty hot in the room -- we have to close the bedroom door too, unless we want kitties crawling all over us when we're trying to sleep. Usually we leave the windows cracked, but still it's hot, and no white noise either. I always start out on my back sleeping, but always seem to end up on my stomach, pulling most of the covers with me as I turn, and pissing off my wife. I don't do it intentionally, mind you. We have a queen size bed. When I came back from Asia in January, as not to disturb my wife while I got over jet lag, I slept in the spare bedroom. That habit stayed until summer, kind of unspoken between us -- the fact that we both prefer to sleep in separate beds. However, since the summer began, again unspoken, we've slept in the same bed. Our dog always starts the night out with us too, but always gets up after 10 minutes and goes down to her spot on the floor. I like pillows as flat and thin as possible. If I'm at a hotel and they have those monster thick pillows, I'll just sleep without one. I love our down comforter, although it can be a bit too warm at times. Oh, and never TV on, nor radio. |
get up? I love not having an alarm wake me. Sounds from outdoors usually seep in, lke water under a carpet, I know they're there, but don't want to acknowledge. I sleep little in the summer, and a lot in the winter. Love an afternoon nap, and also can sleep for an hour or two sitting upright at the keyboard, but it hurts my neck, like straining at the opera. If you could set your own sleep schedule, what would your hours be? I do set my own. I would like to get up before light. watching sunrise is so impressive. there's nothing like it. Do you suffer from insomnia? If so, how often? ruthlessly and as my parts are wearing out, I get up to pee more often and sometimes every hour. One out of seven days seems right for a good night's sleep, although I've had but one in the past three or four months. Can't get comfy. Just get to sleep and either cat, dream, something outside in the dark, or the bladder awakens me. What is your preferred sleep environment? silent, no noise except crickets or pool filter humming (if on the screened porch. Love tent and rain. Cold with flannel sheets, even in summer. Never never tv or radio or anything that can corrupt my brain while I inadvertantly take in information from dubious sources. (Silent? TV on? Temperature?) What position do you usually sleep in? on my back most comfy unless I can get situated face down, neck not cranked, but mostly on my left side so the stomach can drain into intestines, and gas floats up. Learned that after abominal surgery. Where"? king size extra firm extra expensive pillow top soft and cushy on top. With travelling, I need at least the Hampton Inn's or high end Hilton's mattresses. No pillow top, no sleep. In winter i spent much time in recliner next to a roaring fire. pillows lately number four though I love having six or eight which are at the morning all over the floor but one or two. goose down only. reading "Comfortably Numb" lately, writing a couple chapters on relationship building for new book. Deadline Sep 18. Yeah, so some loss of sleep. |
I am in bed no later than 11:30 at night, even on weekends. I usually get up between 7 and 8 am on weekdays, and between 8:30 and 10 on weekends - except when I am going birding with friends, then I usually get up about 4:30AM. If you could set your own sleep schedule, what would your hours be? I would be asleep within 5 minutes of hitting the pillow at 11PM, and wake naturally at 7 am. Do you suffer from insomnia? If so, how often? I do not suffer from insomnia. What is your preferred sleep environment? (Silent? TV on? Temperature?) Preferred environment is with some form of white noise (favorite is wind blowing through the leaves of trees, but has to be the real thing, not a recording), and the temperature is perfect when it's between 50 and 60 degrees, so I can be under a blanket but any exposed body parts won't be cold. What position do you usually sleep in? I go to sleep on my back, but sometimes wake up on my side. Do you sleep in a bed? Futon on the floor? Chair? How hard or soft do you like your mattress, if you use one? How many pillows do you use? I sleep in a bed. I like soft mattresses when I get to sleep on them, but our own mattress is actually fairly firm, and I don't have a problem with that either. I use two pillows. |

Since I don't work regular hours, my sleep schedule is usually around 12:30 - 8:30. If I lived alone and had heavier curtains to block the daylight, I would sleep from 2:30-10:30. I have to get up early on Friday to meet an 8:20 appointment, and, OH, the suffering. I rarely suffer from insomnia, unless I'm anxious about something happening the next day. Most nights, I fall asleep within 5 minutes of shutting the light off. When I have insomnia, it's of the "wake at 3 am and can't fall back asleep" kind. Ideally, the room would be cool to chilly and I would be under a quilt, even in the summer. I'd rather not use a flat sheet, just quilts. I used to have to sleep with my feet covered, even in the summer, but nowadays, I often cover everything else *but* my feet because they get hot. I need white noise when I sleep -- I currently use a fan for that purpose. I prefer a dark room, but right now I sleep in a room so light I can see well enough to read, so I use a sleep mask. I sleep all over the place, but my preferred position seems to be on my left side. I think this is a hold-over from my childhood, when I couldn't sleep on my right side because I was afraid of facing the wall and leaving my back exposed to the room (because of the monsters, you know). I used to believe that I had to be on my back to fall asleep. Right now I sleep on a couch. My own bed has a very firm mattress, which is how I like it. [I once shared a hotel bed with a friend of mine and the mattress was so soft we had to put pillows in between us so that we didn't slide into each other. I don't know how people can stand beds that soft.] I think it would be hard for me to share a bed with someone on a long-term basis. I'm a light sleeper and I can't stand to be touched or too warm while I sleep. |

i go to bed on weeknights between 10 and midnight (depending on how distracted i am that day) and get up at 6:30 after telling my phone to shut up a few times. weekends, anything goes. i wish i could go to bed sometime after dark and get up in somewhat early morning without the worry of being at work on time. i wish i didn't have to sleep with an alarm. i don't keep visible clocks in my room already. i don't really have insomnia but i have apnea and stop breathing sometimes. in a few terrifying situations, i've even known it in my sleep (otherwise i just hear about it the next morning from someone else who's slept in the same room). my favored environment is quiet and dark, slightly breezy. an open window to a rainy night after a temperate day is absolutely ideal (like tonight, yay!) i sleep on my right side, holding myself. right arm on my waist, left underneath my cheek. knees bent. and the bed. oy. i've never paid for a mattress or blankets, though i've bought a set of sheets now and again. my mattress (queen size) was pulled out of a dumpster at an apartment complex down the street after the manager blamed it (not our fault) and a twin (totally our fault) on my house. i can't remember what happened to the twin mattress. i pulled out a queen boxspring too and used it for years but it's gone now. for my 25th birthday i asked for help making a loft bed and so my parents got my uncle to make it for me. it's lovely. there might be three feet of space between the surface of the mattress and the ceiling, i'm not sure. it does make making the bed awkward. pillows. one body pillow, two thick firm, a throw blanket rolled and stuffed into a sack. a stuffed shark with safety pins and jinglebells all over one side. when alone i crawl into bed, in the nude generally, and arrange the covers over me. sheet, blanket, sheet, blanket, comforter and sometimes a throw blanket over the top of it all (not the one in the sack... i never tuck the coverings in because i kick it apart anyway). sometimes my shoulders stick out and usually a foot does unless it's wintertime (my house is old and drips the heat out the windows so we keep the thermostat at 50 in the winter). normally i read for a little while, it could be anything but there's a lot of mythology and erotica. unless i've washed my sheets that day there's always at least three books in my bed. |
i got a deadalus book catalog today and there's a book in it called "the midnight disease: the drive to write, writer's block, and the creative brain." i think nate has the midnight disease. the same catalog has a dengue fever cd for sale. i think i'll buy it. speaking of erections: i just noticed that every time there's one of those "viva viagra" commercials, the men playing - rock, country, blues or whatever - are always alone in the room with no women in sight. i like to imagine that they had all left the room after the first chorus. i just remembered a joke: did you hear that they giving out viagra at the rest home? it keeps the old men from rolling out of bed. |

Re the word nauseous, I can never remember if it's nautious or nauseous. I have a mental block against it. Same with supposedly. Supposively or supposedly. I never liked loft beds. I had one in an apartment for a year, and I never liked having the ceiling 3 foot away from me. True, it freed up a lot of space in the bedroom, but I always felt boxed in. Re the ED meds, seems like Cialis is really kicking Viagra's ass. Now they've come out with a lower dose that you take every day, instead of just "when the moment's right." |
Usually between 11 and 11:30, sometimes later if I'm not tired. If you could set your own sleep schedule, what would your hours be? 10-6. I'm not a morning person, but if I am working by 6 or 7 I get a lot done. Do you suffer from insomnia? If so, how often? Yes, but not so much anymore. What is your preferred sleep environment? (Silent? TV on? Temperature?) Cool enough for some kind of covering, but not cold. A couple of weeks ago I woke up shivering and made Sem turn the fan off. It was awful. I like having some kind of noise to tune out my tinnitus. I use the white noise feature on my clock. I would prefer music but then Sem can't sleep What position do you usually sleep in? I start off on my back with my knees up and a weighted eye pillow on my face. Then I wind up on my side. Every now and then I sleep on my stomach. Soon, that will be impossible. Do you sleep in a bed? Futon on the floor? Chair? How hard or soft do you like your mattress, if you use one? How many pillows do you use? Bed. I like a firm mattress. I use two pillows but they are getting too flat. I'm going to invest in a body pillow soon. |

erections? slept only from 4am to 8am then dozed a few minutes til 9 this morning. So much for Rozerem. |
last night around 2am i sat up in bed and read the story "the music of erich zann" aloud (loudly and dramatically). it was difficult because the words swan around on the page. (i don't mean that in a poetic way; i mean there was something wrong with my vision.) it helped me sleep, though - a little. |

If you had a long busy day without or little free times. You may experience "tireness", avoid "caffinee drink beverage of any kind. Fine A very soft matress where your body can sink in such "heavenly" way. Fine. It is all set in! I recommends that you do some research on sleeping materials that aid you to sleep. |
