The 1972 thing is true. It's 7 (num days in week) * 4 (leap year) number of years before the year 2000. Every 28 years the dates / day of week cycle repeats.

I couldn't find an urban legend about VCR's on that site, but it makes sense that it should work. The math is right, just check a calendar. Unfortunately, I can't test it on my VCR, as it has no date setting. (just day of the week) However, it might not work on some VCR chipsets if the time is encoded as the number of seconds after a hardcoded time that's after January 1, 1972.

if anyone was wondering, my VCR is just fine.
