    TO: Concerned Californians*

FROM: Bruce Mirken, MPP director of communications

    DATE: Thursday, September 5, 2002

SUBJECT: Protest the DEA's latest attack on the sick

Early in the morning of Sept. 5, DEA agents raided the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) in Santa Cruz. This co-op grew marijuana and distributed it free to its 300 members -- 85 percent of whom are terminally ill with cancer, late-stage AIDS, or other horrible illnesses -- and was known statewide as a caring and conscientious operation.

But that didn't matter to the two dozen armed DEA agents who swarmed down on the co-op, tore up its garden and arrested founders Valerie and Mike Corral on marijuana trafficking charges, taking them away in handcuffs. In press interviews, DEA spokespeople are no longer denying that they are explicitly going after medical marijuana providers.

Indeed, they appear to be targeting the most conscientious and ethical dispensaries in an effort to send a message that no one is safe. This is nothing but state-sponsored terrorism. Please join us to demand an end to the DEA's war on the sick:

    (1) PROTEST. MPP is working with Americans for Safe Access -- http://www.safeaccessnow.org -- to stage protests at federal buildings all over the state at noon on Friday, Sept. 6. Call ASA at 510-486-8083 for details of an action near you, or planyour own.

    (2) CALL SENATORS BOXER AND FEINSTEIN. Congress can stop this DEA terrorism by passing H.R. 2592, the States' Rights to Medical Marijuana Act, sponsored in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). But no similar bill has been introduced in the Senate. Call Senators Boxer and Feinstein and demand that they stand up for California's most vulnerablecitizens by introducing a Senate bill equivalent to HR 2592.

    Sen. Barbara Boxer: 202-224-3553

    Sen. Diane Feinstein: 202-224-3841

Please act NOW to help us end our government's vicious attack on eriously ill people

Bay Area Activists to Protest at Federal Buildings

New DEA Raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Stir Protests in More Than 50 Cities

San Francisco, CA – The Drug Enforcement Agency raided another medical marijuana dispensary today in Santa Cruz, California, arresting 2 people and shutting off safe access to life affirming medicine to 300 seriously ill patients. In response to the federal government’s failure to respect local state laws that permit the use of medical marijuana for the seriously ill, activists will engage in protest and civil disobedience at the Oakland and San Francisco Federal Buildings.

    WHO: Americans for Safe Access

WHAT: Protest against DEA Raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensary

    WHEN: September 6th at noon

WHERE: The federal building in Oakland, CA, is located at 1301 Clay Street at 14th. The federal building in San Francisco is located at 450 Golden Gate in downtown.

    Speakers:
    Oakland - Ram Dass
SF - Joe DeVries of the AC Supervisor Miley’s office, Kris Worthington of the Berkeley City Council, and Angel McClary of Operation Patient Rescue

Since October 2001, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has raided four medical marijuana dispensaries that operate in cooperation with local authorities in California. More raids are expected in the coming weeks and months. Hundreds of patients have lost safe access to their medicine due to the violent raids on which federal authorities have spent untold amounts of money and manpower.

    Grassroots Pressure is Growing

On June 6, thousands of people nationwide participated in protests at DEA and Department of Justice offices in 50 cities. Over 1,500 people have pledged to resist the federal crackdown by disrupting business-as-usual at DEA offices the day after the next raid. “We are outraged at yesterdays raids on legal medical marijuana dispensaries in California,” says Hilary McQuie. “Our protest will call on the DEA to Cease and Desist harassment of patients people who care for them.”

Americans for Safe Access is an aggressive grassroots campaign designed to force the federal government to stop its attack on patients and respect the rights of voters to choose medical marijuana policy.

    Our Demands:
We demand that all prosecutions of medical marijuana patients, growers, and dispensaries cease immediately.

We demand that President Bush & Attorney General Ashcroft declare a moratorium on the Federal anti-medical marijuana campaign.

We demand President Bush declare his support for HR 2592, the States’ Rights to Medical Marijuana Act.

The White House’s own comprehensive review of medical marijuana released by the Institute of Medicine in March of 1999 declared:
Marijuana works as a medicine for some people.

Patients are already using medicinal marijuana despite its illegality.

Marijuana does not present significant health risks relative to medicines that are legally available.

No evidence that prison is better for patients than marijuana.

While more research should be conducted into marijuana's medical uses, chronically or terminally ill patients should be permitted to use marijuana in the meantime.

six posts by nate, none by anyone else.

    i've been spunked.

By semillama on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 06:14 pm:

    here's one:

Why am I not surprised? Just another action by El Presidente, King George the Second. I hate this administration. I thought King George the First was bad, but now he kinda seems like a liberal.

eh. I am going to go drink beer and eat food. One destination is an English pub, Churchill's.
I am getting so jaded about this administration, i can't even rant about it anymore.

By Nate on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 06:30 pm:

really, these are not actions of a true conservative. state's rights to govern themselves should be paramount, and we voted to legalize medical mary.

nor can we really blame 41 or 43. 42 was pretty whack, increasing DEA funding more than any other president.

thought give 43 a chance... after all, get AIDs and you ride with bin laden.

By Nate on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 06:32 pm:

jaded, though. don't let your (true) patriotism slip away. we're headed for facism and it will take people ready to die for their ideas to keep it from quickening.

By dave. on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 07:09 pm:

    how palestinian.

it is appalling, outrageous and fascist but it's also numbingly disappointing. it's human. if the government weren't there to fuck us over, our own neighbors would assume that role. we'd have warlords and clans and conflict conflict conflict. we are a doomed organism.

By Antigone on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 07:12 pm:

All organisms are doomed. Such is life.

By dave. on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 07:13 pm:

This country either needs a good enema or an ass fucking !!

By J on Friday, September 6, 2002 - 07:19 pm:

I just like the sound of that.

By patrick on Monday, September 9, 2002 - 02:17 pm:

im at a loss for words.

the DEA has been doing this to the State of CA since that prop passed years ago.

They raided a West Hollywood dispensary back in January. The WeHo facillity served mostly AIDS patients.

Dubya is too stupid to understand the idea of states' rights.

By semillama on Monday, September 9, 2002 - 06:55 pm:

Sometimes state's rights are a good thing.

    Sometimes they are not.

By Nate on Monday, September 9, 2002 - 08:58 pm:

yeah. whenever i agree with the law the state wants, it is a good thing. whenever i disagree, thank god for the federal government!

By J on Tuesday, September 10, 2002 - 12:00 pm:

Facism,no kidding, the wire taps, the chips, our rights being taken away supposedly because of terrorist, they just got a chance to get their foot in the door to something they had wanted long before 9/11. I've been watching for over 30 years for some marijuana reformation and it just looks like it's never going to happen. The fact that our country's founders grew it doesn't count, nor that the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp count. I don't think I'm going to see it in my lifetime.

By patrick on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 01:48 pm:

    did you see this nate?

the big court rules against state's rights

    My favorite:

""Our national medical system relies on proven scientific research, not popular opinion. To date, science and research have not determined that smoking marijuana is safe or effective," John Walters, director of National Drug Control Policy, said Monday."

I have a stack of FDA approved, heart failing Celebrex in my medicine cabinet.

Our national medical system relies on the economical dictates of large corporations. there is no money to be made in a plant that will grow in anyone's backyard, ergo, it is not safe or effective.

But if you can make money on some drug that will make your limpdicked daddy blind or your arthritic grandma's heart suddenly seize, by all means, western medicine wants you.

I went to my doctor for this issue I'm having in my head. Before I'd barely said three words, she had a firm diagnosis. After another five minutes of me telling her why it definitely wasn't vertigo, she relented and had me go straight to the opthomologist.

The opthomologist dialated my eyes, poked, prodded and peered, and eventually said "I have no idea what is wrong, but it will probably go away."

    Science!

By droopy on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 01:26 pm:

wait till you have to deal with the national medical system as directly as i do. it's like being in a kafka novel.

By Nate on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 02:18 pm:

    i can only imagine.

ain't nothing like a big beaurocracy that has no need to worry about competing for clientelle to bring out the best in service.

    that's why socialism is good.

By platypus on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 03:54 pm:

Yeah, I like that it took four hours to fill my prescription for birth control today, because the pharmacy kept claiming that my insurance had expired. I was about to start hurling toothbrushes at the stupid clerk, who apparently doesn't understand how the Gregorian calendar works.

By kazu on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 04:02 pm:

I went to the doctor today because Y's cat bit me
yesterday. I cleaned it, but today I couldn't move
my thumb. By law they are required to report it
to Animal Control. I had to talk to them after they
told the nurse that my address didn't exist in DeKalb
    county.

The nurse and doctor were really annoyed, she just
wanted me to find out if the cat had all it's shots up
    to date.

So now, Y has to put her perfectly healthy, fully
vaccinated cat into quarrantine for 10 days. I don't
know why. The cat has had all it's shots. She has proof.
The cat is not even that aggressive; he just freaked
out when I changed his litter.

By droopy on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 04:09 pm:

socialism is good? who are you and what have you done with

    "Nate on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 02:16 pm:

in socialism, the control of all resources is centralized. this is like putting nukes in all major american cities and putting the button that detonates them in the middle of baghdad. someone's going to press that button.

socialism is a line protocol with no error checking. it maybe faster in theory, not having to pass checksums, et al, but the assumption that there is no line noise isn't reality.

Capitalism is deadbolting your door at night. Socialism is nailing your door open, putting a twelvepack on your coffee table, and forbidding your daughters to wear clothes."

i would miss the adventure. try spending a whole year trying to get a new wheelchair.

By Antigone on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 04:41 pm:

Seems that Nate has had a litle run in with reality.

By Antigone on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 04:42 pm:

And damn, droop. Either you've got a memory from hell or you have some serious search fu.

By Mr. Mackey on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 05:11 pm:

    drugs are bad mmmkay

By wisper on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 05:54 pm:

I think y'all are misunderstanding Nate.

"big beaurocracy that has no need to worry about competing" <---this is socialism

By TBone on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 05:58 pm:

But it doesn't necessarily have the same goal.

By Nate on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:02 pm:

    just the same net effect.

yeah, droop, i was being sarcasm.

By Nate on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:02 pm:

    er, sarcastic

By droopy on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:09 pm:

i see that, now. i still had the big drug companies thing in my mind.

By TBone on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:10 pm:

    No, I'M socialism.

By Nate on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:19 pm:

yeha. i don't like capitalism anymore. that's what got you.

By droopy on Monday, June 6, 2005 - 06:37 pm:

    seriously? that'd throw me.

possibly i'd been thinking about how i've been pining away for our old quasi-socialist system. there's more beaurocracy in the social security system now than there ever was with the liberal pinkos. for your protection, of course.
