ONOLULU, Oct. 31 (Reuters) - Kam Fong Chun, known on television as Detective
Chin Ho Kelly in the popular crime series "Hawaii Five-O," died here on Oct.
    18. He was 84.

The cause was lung cancer, his family said.

Working under the stage name Kam Fong, he appeared on "Hawaii Five-O" from
its debut, in 1968, until 1978, two years before the series was canceled. He
was the trusted, tough detective working alongside the show's main
character, Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord.

Mr. Chun was a Honolulu Police Department officer for 16 years before
leaving the force in 1959 devote himself to acting. He also ran a
real-estate business and a talent agency before joining the show. In an
interview Mr. Chun said he left "Hawaii Five-0" because he felt the scripts
were becoming stale. The show's writers killed off his character, and in
that episode, his dying words were, "It was all worth it."

Mr. Chun's first wife and two young children were killed in June 1944 when a
pair of military planes collided above Honolulu and crashed into their home
below. His second wife, Gladys Chun, died this year.

His survivors include his sons Dennis and Dickson; his daughters Brenda Chun
and Valerie Chun; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter; his mother, Mary
Powers; a brother, Herbert Chun; and two sisters, Vivian Wong and Helen
    Ching.
