    "hey friends&loves.
been a long time since i've sent out a plea to get on the political bandwagon... but this one speaks my language. (brown) rice as protest symbol!!! read down to the end for the historical precedent. (maybe dubbya will become a vegan after abandoning WWW3!) in all seriousness, those freaks in the white house DO care about public opinion (even if they don't care about the opinions of the public)... so take 5 minutes and put some rice in an envelope. read on... & pass on.
hope you all are keeping warm & dry.
    xo"
    ---------------------------
There is a grassroots campaign begun by a local peace center with a secular focus. I am suggesting that people of faith add the faith-based message on their note to the President.

Place 1/2 c. uncooked rice in a small plastic bag (a snack-sized bag or sandwich bag work fine.)

Squeeze out excess air and seal the bag. Wrap it in a piece of paper on which you have written:

"If your enemies are hungry, feed them." Romans 12:20 Please send this rice to the people of Iraq; do not attack them.

Place the paper and bag of rice in an envelope (either a letter-sized or small padded mailing envelope - both are the same cost to mail) and address them to:

    President George Bush
White House - 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
    Washington, DC 20500

Attach $1.06 in postage. (Three 37 cent stamps equal $1.11)

Drop this in the mail TODAY. It is important to act NOW so that President Bush gets the letters ASAP!

In order for this protest to be effective, there must be hundreds of thousands of such rice deliveries to the White House. We can do this if we all forward this message to our friends and family. If we get the message out, there will be packets from hundreds of thousands of people!

There is a positive history of this protest! Read on!

"In the mid 1950s, the pacifist Fellowship of Reconciliation, learning of famine in the Chinese mainland, launched a "Feed Thine Enemy" campaign.
Members and friends mailed thousands of little bags of rice to the White House with a tag quoting the Bible, "If thine enemy hunger, feed him." As far as anyone knew for more than ten years, the campaign was an abject failure. The President did not acknowledge receipt of the bags
publicly; certainly no rice was ever sent to China.

"What nonviolent activists only learned a decade later was that the campaign played a significant, perhaps even determining role in preventing nuclear war. Twice while the campaign was on, President Eisenhower met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff to consider US options in the conflict with China over two islands, Quemoy and Matsu. The generals twice recommended the use of nuclear weapons. President Eisenhower each time turned to his aide and asked how many little bags of rice had come in. When told they numbered in the tens of thousands, Eisenhower told the generals that as long as so many Americans were expressing active interest in having the US feed the Chinese, he certainly wasn't going to consider using nuclear weapons against them."

From: People Power: Applying Nonviolence Theory by David H. Albert, p. 43, New Society, 19.

Thank you all for being people of hope

By semillama on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 03:12 pm:

Now I'm hungry. Thanks a lot.

By Ignatius J. Reilly on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 03:15 pm:

You are a grievously naive menace and a putrid, chromosome deficient cause of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

By eri on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 03:50 pm:

I think this is the second time someone has posted this exact same thing in the past month.

By semillama on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 04:48 pm:

    What, the rice thing?

By Ignatius J. Reilly on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 04:50 pm:

semillama, you are an ineffably incompetent sloven and a debased, armpit-licking depravity of genetics.

By moonit on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 04:52 pm:

oh oh my turn... what am i??

By eri on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 05:36 pm:

Yeah, the rice thing. I saw it here before, recently. I never responded to it, because I think that the idea of sending rice in the mail is stupid.

By Ignatius J. Reilly on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 12:21 pm:

You are a confoundedly licentious heathen and a perverted, thick-headed acrid smog of oppressively caustic oral effluvium.

This entire site is an unholy abomination and an affront to a moral society.

By Bigkev on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 01:47 pm:

Sem, do you have a multiple personality disorder?

By Ignatius J. Reilly on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 04:26 pm:

Who is this "Sem" you speak of, you miserably execrable moron and narcissistic, cold-hearted odious leach-covered blob of quivering slime? How dare you impugne the honor of Your Working Boy? Boethius would never have stood for such an abortion of an idea. I can feel my valve closing!

By Rowlf on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 05:00 pm:

"I think that the idea of sending rice in the mail is stupid."

    Agreed. Send pretzels.

By eri on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - 08:24 pm:

Funny, very funny. If I want to make a political statement it won't be some stupid rice package in the mail. That would be like sending a political message by chain letters. Stupid. Useless.
