By spunky on Friday, June 27, 2003 - 01:33 am:

    Thurmond's career, life were extraordinary
Thurmond's public and political career spanned nearly all of the 20th century. It began in Edgefield County, where he was elected county school superintendent in 1929, and ended in the United States Capitol, where he was the longest-serving senator in history.
Strom's legacy will be his service to the state and people he loved
On tens of thousands of letters to constituents carefully cataloged at the Strom Thurmond Institute at Clemson University, the last line is nearly always the same:
"If there is ever anything I can do for you as your senator, please do not hesitate to call on me."

    1903-2003
