Younger audience turn to Classic FM
19:39 GMT, Thursday 30th January 2003 -- by Jason Crawley

Classic FM has increased its younger listenership by almost a quarter in the last three months, new Rajar figures have shown today.

The GWR classical music station achieved a 24% rise in listeners aged 15-24 during the last quarter, following the introduction of a revamped schedule and presenters including Katie Derham and 22 year old Lisa Duncombe, who was taken on after complaining about the absence of young hosts at the station.

Classic FM now boasts a national commercial share of 62.3% and a reach of 6.7 million people, with the station also claiming to have more listeners in London than BBC Radio 1, Virgin and the Emap station Magic 105.4.

"We are witnessing the birth of a new young generation of classical music fans," said Classic FM's managing director Roger Lewis, who believes that the station's younger audience will benefit its spinoff Classic FM TV, as it competes with mainstream pop channels.
