By semillama on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 12:01 pm:

    well, it's official, folks.

I asked Kazu to marry me last week, and wouldn't you know it, she said yes!

No firm plans yet, but we will likely be tying the knot late next summer or early the summer after that, so we can have an outdoor wedding.

I asked her at Plum Island, MA, while we were there so I could watch birds, so she didn't suspect I had other motives for being there.

By Antigone on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 01:06 pm:

    Congrats!

By droopy on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 01:19 pm:

so that's why "eaten by the monster of love" was running through my mind all week.

    mazel tov.

By wisper on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 02:51 pm:

    can we come?
    (all of us??? :)

By kazu on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 03:11 pm:

    maybe.

By TBone on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 03:40 pm:

    Congrats! That's wonderful news.

By kazu on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 04:17 pm:

    thank you everyone.

sem was really cute. although when he first started
talking, I thought he was going to say something bad.
However, when he started saying he wanted to spend
his life with me and reaching for his pocket, I figured out
    what was going on.

By semillama on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 04:31 pm:

plus, I got a new watch out of the deal - score!

By kazu on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 04:38 pm:

yeah, I read somewhere about a tradition where women
give the man a watch when they become engaged. I've
seen a few jewelers with "engagement watches" but I
just got Sem a nice Fossil watch. It's pretty. It has a blue
    face.

By Dougie on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 06:16 pm:

Holy shit guys, that's great news -- congratulations!!! That's so cool! Here's wishing that your life together is filled with joy and happiness and everything good!

Also, I've got a Fossil watch. With a blue face. That my sweetheart gave me. Not as an engagment present, but it's cool too.

By platypus on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 06:44 pm:

    Hooray! It's about bloody time.

Sorabjite nuptials seem to be abounding this year.

By lapis on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 06:46 pm:

    wow. congratulations! that's awesome.

By droopy on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 07:03 pm:

i still haven't got a handle on how many of you got married.

    sarah, i think
    cyst
i'm vague on what's going on with nate and heather.

i used to wear the ring my paternal grandmother gave my grandfather (both dead) as an engagement present. but the band broke and i haven't gotten around to fixing it.

By heather on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 09:26 pm:

nate and heather live in the same state and have never been engaged or married [to each other]

By heather on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 11:36 pm:

oops. did i forget the yay part?

    yay!

By droopy on Monday, August 15, 2005 - 11:50 pm:

just curious. i have you two down in my notes as "eugenicist's dream über-couple whose children will one day rule the earth."

but i hate to be nosy.

By Nate on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 12:08 am:

while that statement may still be true, it is highly unlikely that my children and her children will be the same children.

unless there is something i don't know about.

or, you know, those eggs i harvested and put in the freezer weren't affected by the three-day power outage.

By Nate on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 12:13 am:

er, nevermind. i forgot i used those up one night when i was hard up for tobiko.

shit, sorry sem and kazu. we're mucking up your celebration thread.

congratulations, and all that. i think you have a good thing going. if you invite me to your wedding, i promise i'll get really drunk and try to copulate with one of your older female relatives.

By Rowlfe on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 12:10 pm:

By kazu on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 12:42 pm:

    aw...you guys are sweet.

nate, can I pick the cousin?

By dave. on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 01:09 pm:

    congratulations to you both!

By kazu on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 01:30 pm:

do you think our relatives will be annoyed if we don't
    play the chicken dance?

By Spider on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 01:36 pm:

    Whoooo!

How cool/strange/voyeuristic/neat is it that we have gotten to witness the entire Sem-Kazu relationship unfold on these boards?

By Nate on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 01:51 pm:

cousin? i was thinking like, great-aunt or something.

By kazu on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 01:57 pm:

I know just the woman then.

By patrick on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 06:15 pm:

    way to go guys!

and yes spider, it is a bit odd. as if this place is a petri dish.

im more than happy to serve as an example of how not to make a marriage last. let my failures be your light.

By wisper on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 09:32 pm:

but your failures were always kept vauge.

Perhaps if you can supply a clear point-form list?

By agatha on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 10:10 pm:

    Shit! I'm way behind.

I'm reminded of Brak talking about the question "What is love?" on Space Ghost. How cute are you guys?

By jack on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

    champagne showers.....cousins.....laughs...

congratutlations sem and good luck kazu.

By patrick on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:02 pm:

actually wisper it was all her fault. i say "my" failures because of my need to co-op other peoples problems.

    hot dog sem!

    hip hiphorayyyyy kazoooo!

By brak on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

You know love is a happy time. All throughout the universe.
It's when the male part of the species goes to the female part of
    the species and says:
"Hey, do you want to go on a date?"
And then she would say: "Why yes, I'd like to go on a date."
    If you're LUCKY!-
And then you go to a restaurant, and she gets something called
    A salad.
And then he gets a big piece of beef, that he eats.
And that to me ladies and gentlemen, is LOVE.
Kinda makes you cry, doesn't it?

By wisper on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 03:55 pm:

Brak may be my favorite fictional character of all time. He's so cute he makes my eyes water.

By agatha on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 08:33 pm:

I was looking for that! Who has better research skills than I? WHO?

By Nelly on Friday, August 19, 2005 - 09:53 pm:

    cute, cute, cute.

you may think i haven't been paying attention, but...

    well, now i am...
may showers of blessings fall upon you

By Daniel ssss on Saturday, August 20, 2005 - 12:05 am:

Congrats to you both. Someday sorabjitown will have its own wedding chapel, endless beach, and functional gournet kitchen. Until then, keep the reality plugged in. from an old guy, my best.

By Antigone on Monday, August 22, 2005 - 03:26 am:

Boy or girl, the name should be Shithead.

By Nate on Monday, August 22, 2005 - 10:33 am:

why would they want to name their kid after you, tiggy?

By droopy on Monday, August 22, 2005 - 01:03 pm:

i had an a great-aunt shithéad. it's an old irish name. i think it would be a great choice.

i just remembered that moonit had announced she was getting married (or had been proposed to) like a month ago. anybody heard any more about that?

By Antigone on Monday, August 22, 2005 - 01:43 pm:

Noooo, Naaaaate, I mean they shuud name it after yoooo, doooooooooofussssssss!

By kazu on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 - 10:07 am:

I have our kids names picked out, Max and Alexandra.
Sem doesn't like Max, but I'm just going to write it on
the birth certificate when he's not looking.

By dave. on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 - 10:44 am:

i like max for a girl.

there was a guy at my office named max powers. best name ever for an übergeek scientist. thick glasses, jackets w/ elbow patches, the whole 9.

By platypus on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 - 03:21 pm:

A friend of mine is trying to convince me to change my name to Max. I don't know if it's going to happen. But it is an excellent name, especially for a girl. I like girl names that defy the norm a bit.

Max & Alex has a nice ring to it, as well.

By TBone on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 - 07:28 pm:

I've always wanted to name a daughter Alex.

By Antigone on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 01:25 am:

I've always been partial to Tralfaz.

By moonit on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 02:00 am:

I love Julian but the Pandyr hates it.

And yes Droop I have a little bling on that finger :) Eight years of bloody waiting though :0

    YAY Kazu and Sem!!!!

By The Watcher on Friday, October 7, 2005 - 11:57 am:

    Oh joy!!!

Let the pain and suffering begin!!!

No, may you only experience joy and happiness for the rest of your days.

By Karla on Friday, October 7, 2005 - 03:44 pm:

Just a thot: Max has become a pretty trendy name for a boy. It's in the Top 200 "most popular" names for 2004. On the other hand, it hasn't been in the top 1,000 names for a girl for the past 15 yrs. Check it out at www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ Not that any of that should matter if you really like it. The year I named my son Zach it was the 4th most popular name for boys. There are five kids with his same name (first and last) at our pediatrician's office.

By Karla on Friday, October 7, 2005 - 03:45 pm:

and congrats on your pending nuptials, btw...
